My moms GX 470 squeaks a lot at lower speeds and when pressing on the brakes. She's taken it to the repair shop twice, they said they tried replacing the brakes and they were still squeaking. It has to be something around the wheels cause thats where the sound is coming from. Wondering if any of you had this problem and solved it somehow?

 

Two things: shims and break pad adhesive. That will solve your problem.

 

I fully agree with gsobol, the symptoms quoted, are when the brake pads are reaching its threshold, the shims give out this noise when applied, "The truck is crying, Please replace my pads" lol

 

Would that also fix the rubbing type sound? On the driver side rear those breaks squeak really loud when pressing on the brakes, and on the passenger side rear breaks it sounds like its rubbing.

Yea, on the right rear it sounds like metal on metal scraping. And on the left rear its just really really loud when braking, a really high pitched squeal.

 

Metal on metal scraping usually means that the 'wear indicators' noise (squeaking) was ignored for quite a while and now you are grinding/gouging the brake pads metal mount directly on the rotors. So if the grinding has been happening for a while, your rotors are probably shot and cannot be resurfaced. You are probably looking at new pads and new rotors (for the wheel making the grinding noise) when you take it in for a brake job which will be much more costly than just a regular brake job.

You need to get it checked out quick because metal on metal brakes greatly reduces your braking ability and can be dangerous.

 

Bingo. I would also add that if the scraping is only coming from one side, there is a possibility of a seized caliper. If you look through the wheel spokes you can see the rotors. I would feel them (be sure the car is cold as these get VERY hot) with your fingers, if only the one is scored (the metal on metal one) and the other is not I would definitely suspect a caliper (brakes tend to wear uniformly for obvious reasons).

 

It looks like seized pistons in calipers are common problem on GX trucks.
My service records are shoving replacement of both front calipers (godwill) at 89K miles.
Your mom should try a different repair shop if they could not diagnozed it right twice and get second opinion from other mechanic. Safety first!

 

If they were recently replaced at an Indy shop they could have used a cheap metallic pad. They will squeal forever. Toyotas/Lexus are real finicky with aftermarket pads.

 

Des anyone here knows who is manufacturing the oem Toyota / Lexus brake pads?
