Rear Shocks a real shock
My gx needs new rear shocks and is over warrenty with 56k. what a shock the price is. $820 for both before they are installed. Ouch. Just wanted to vent a little it makes me feel better.
Is that from a dealer's pricing which most of the time is higher or did you try shopping around for the part. I would usually shop for the part first so I know how much I can get it outside dealership and If I can find it cheaper, I use that to haggle the price with the dealer... sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I then find a reputable shop to install the part I bought cheaper and save money that way. Of course I am talking about genuine lexus/toyota parts which you can shop around in the net. Thanks by the way for the post, I will definitely keep that in mind when my time comes.
I'm still a ways off from my standard warranty expiring but would rear shock replacements be part of the extended warranty if I purchased one from Lexus? With the rear shocks and KDSS I could image suspension costs being extremely high as the GX ages.
Man, I guess I better start putting some more money away.. I am getting ready for the 52,500 service on my 2003. I assume the shocks would need replacement sooner if the gx has been used on rough or uneven terrain often, offroading or carried heavy loads, etc... Mine is mostly highway. SO hopefully I can go all the way to 100K before anything like that happens.
Shocks are usually considered wear and tear items unless it is a manufacturer's defect. The extended warranty should cover the KDSS system. One draw back to the KDSS or the XRES as found on the 4runner is that they are very expensive to replace.

tyoung88 and others: so how much was it?
I drove to Tahoe in the winter this year (over 1000 miles round trip & lots of mountain roads/snow). I also have been hauling anywhere from 500-1000lbs of boulders from a rock quarry in the back area the last month.
I took it for an oil change last week and they said my shocks are leaking slightly. Im at 70K and my shocks have been fine until i did all this bouncing around lately. Before that it was pretty much highway.
I need to start pricing it myself and get ideas/experience from people like you guys. thanks!

I own a 2005 GX w/34k miles and it is a little concerning to read these reports of having to replace shocks at such low mileage.
What and where do you look for a leaking shock? This is obviously something that I would prefer to have happen while still under warranty (at least the first time) given the significant cost involved.
