Smile Clunk Update

We had noticed the "clunk", but it didn 't seem too bad so we decided to ignore it.

That is until my mom was riding with us and at the first stop sign, the "clunk" happened and she asked about it. Since then several passengers have asked us about it and wondered why we weren't going to persue a fix.

So, here we are in Jan of 2007 and we visited our local dealer for some unrelated service. I asked about the "clunk" issue and the service rep said that they were due to receive the parts within the next three weeks. He wrote-up a service request for our vehicle and said that they would call us when the parts had arrived.

By the time we got home, I had received an e-mail from the parts department confirming the special order.

I will post updates as I get them.
Well, the parts are in and our GX is scheduled for service on 3/7/2007 for parts installation. I'll post another update afterwards to report results. I don't know why others have had trouble getting the parts. Our order seemed pretty quick.

I am fairly new to the forum; but so far the info has been invaluable...

I live in the DC / Balitmore Corridor and recently purchased a 2003 GX Clunk 470 w/ 36k miles. My wife first noticed the clunk 2 weeks after we purcahsed the vehicle; this is when I subscribed to this forum and found out about this ever so poplular TSB. I called Lexus of Rockville, the dealer where we purchased our Clunk 470, and they have the parts in stock (should I be shocked here?). I drop the car off Wednesday for the repair and plan to keep the board posted on my results.

On another note, I will be towing with this vehicle. So I will be pushing this clunk fix to the limits.

Welcome Drew!

It's great that they are going to fix the clunk without a hassle. Let us know how it goes. It will be interesting to see if the fix survives the stress of towing.

Glad to hear that Lexus is finally catching up with the TSB parts production. Its been 10 months since the TSB came out so the parts should be available now.

Default Got the fix today....

Called for another service issue / also inquired about clunk fix. Lexus said parts available. Dropped off GX the same day, few hours later clunk fix was done - driveshaft + control arms. So in a few hours in/out of dealership/ no advance notice....! Not bad!

Ride felt no different - maybe slightly stiffer - but I think that is a good think. Felt no clunk. Frankly clunk was beginning to be a pain so glad I got the fix.

P.S. I have KDSS / service tech stated no special parts required.

What dealer did you take it to? Was it in the Capitol Beltway area?

Well the results are in... NO CLUNK!!

We picked-up our GX on Thursday and the TSB was a success!! Seems to have improved the ride as well.

We also discovered that we made the right choice in the beginning when we chose the GX over the RX. The RX is nice and all, but after months of driving our GX, the RX's lack of features was disapointing. It had loads of spunk for a V6, but that was the sum of the pros for me.

We've owned our 05' GX for about 1 month now. Wife has mentioned something to me about the truck making a clunking sound every once in a little while. Says it feels like somebody might have tapped her in the rear. She also said somtimes it will make a clunk while just being stopped at a light, does that seem right? Will the problem gradually get worse? Or should i just take it on in?

I would get the TSB clunk fix now. It will only get worse in my experience with my 2006 GX. After I got it, the clunk was gone, but the ride was a bit stiffer for awhile. Things seem to be loosening up now.

I agree with Doc. Your wife's experience matches the "clunk" symptoms. You might as well get it fixed now.

Called the dealer today but missed the return call. Told me to get ahol;d of them any time tommorrow and they will order the parts and get me in right away. My original salesperson called me back and mentioned the word "recall" in the message she left and is familiar with our problem.

So, is Lexus calling this a recall i wonder??? Hmmm......

Its a TSB, not a recall because its not a safety or operational issue. Your techincal advisor should use the right terms.

Default finally after 4yrs

Dropped off my GX on Mon night to have Magnussen Lexus of Fremont perform the updated TSB fix. I picked it up last night, and didn't notice clunk while driving back home.

This morning while driving to work I felt something strange with the ride... something was missing. Guess what? I got used to of driving with the clunk that was not there. Wow! much improved ride. I think Lexus should compensate me for driving more than 40k miles with the clunk

Thanks to Lexus for listening to consumers.
