Default Engine Fuel pump Noise Reduction.

Stumbled upon this in the 3GS forum.

What engine fuel pump looks like with intake tube removed:

Engine fuel pump covers with sound insulating foam on the inside:

Engine Fuel pump covers installed:

Those who installed it notice a 30-50% reduction in noise.
http://www.lexusownersclub.co.uk/for...n-pump-gs450h/
https://www.clublexus.com/forums/gs-...-gs-350-a.html

The part numbers say it will only fit the v8's, but many 3gs owners have installed this on their v6 GS engine fuel pumps without issue.

For less than $30 a 30-50% reduction in direct injection noise sounds like an easy worth while mod to me. I plan on checking to see if my engine fuel pump looks like the 3GS then buying the parts and seeing if it will fit the 4GS.

Just straight pipe your car and you won't be hearing the direct injection ticks anymore.

Apparently Lexus first came out with the covers without sound insulating foam in the center. Then they updated the part numbers in 2013 and added the foam.

It's obvious Lexus tried to quiet the direct injection noise, then improved the part. This was intended for v8's. Why they would omit the parts on future cars makes no sense to me, other than trying to cut costs.

One abstract thought is if done wrong, this cover could induce corrosion to the components. As components cool from say 200°F to ambient, moisture can and does collect on them. In open air it simply evaporates and nothing comes of it. However these being from the dissimilar metals and if the insulation material leaches anything, it could induce corrosion. Just a guess....

It sounds tempting for the 2GR-FSE in the 2IS.

Yes, each part is half of the cover and they clip together.

Just ordered the parts cost me $32.30 including shipping from LexusPartsNow.com

I'm expecting minor modification maybe trim some plastic or foam to get this to fit perfectly on the 4GSh, we'll see. Since I have the hybrid this ticking noise is somewhat annoying at startup, once the hybrid system warms up it goes all electric at idle.

Encouraging feedback from other members:

" The noise your getting is from the injectors and high pressure fuel pump, yes i know you already now that! The pump is the loudest one. Go to your dealers parts department and ask for the high pressure pump cover (right side) off a LS460. This cover will fit your GS high pressure pump. This cover will make your GS a lot quieter! Trust me! "

JLAWS
" Just a follow up. I bought the covers and installed them. Took about 10 minutes to figure out. You do have to disconnect the intake hose to get to the pump. Don't be afraid to bend the fuel line slightly to fit the cover halves over the pump. The covers have the same insulation as the engine cover.

With the pump cover on along with the engine cover and the hood closed I am happy to report that there IS an improvement! The metallic cycling/ticking noise from the pump is muffled now. Well worth the $33!! Our cars should have had these on straight out of the factory!"

"Sounds 100% normal to me. The high pressure fuel pump is loud. You can buy covers to muffle the ticking. It made about a 30% difference to me. You'll get used to the sound after the while."

leonsup
" Sorry it has taken me so long for an update....my wife took her '07 GS350 in about 2 weeks ago & they installed "direct injection insulators" from an LS. I never drive the car but she says it's about 25% quieter. "

derkins
"Noisy Direct Injection pump GS450h. That annoying DI pump ticking that once you hear it...it's all you hear.Did some digging here and on a US site then spoke to my friendly Toyota garage about getting some sound dampening covers ordered in.Ordered up parts 12606-38010 & 12605-38010 (two halves of the cover) for £33 and voila...50% reduction in the tick noise.Dead simple. Main engine cover off, and both ends of the air intake (jubillee type bands) to get a bit of space & light.NOT easy to squeeze a hand in the back and seat it in the right place and a little bit of plastic surgery (snip..snip) on the front half to get it to go past the fixing bolts..and that's that."

Looks like the covers will not work for the 450h. My engine fuel pump is on it's side compared to the 3GS one.
I looked at picture of the non-hybrid and looks like the pump is the same as 3GS. Looks like this mod will only work for the non-hybrid.

I'm just glad the pump is not located inside the tank. Replaced a few on other makes and it was a real pain to remove the tank just to replace the pump.

^ You are thinking of the low pressure fuel pump that feeds this pump. That is still located inside the tank. The high pressure fuel pump takes the fuel and pressurizes it to 140psi to feed direct inject systems.

If he wants to send me the parts I would be more than happy to take a crack at it.

Although the condensation concern is a valid one where I live....
