Default Power steering issue - need help!!

I need help with diagnosing a 2013 fsport RWD w/135k. Bought a new battery last year and seems to be charging fine. Timeline of events - keep in mind I didn’t drive anywhere else within these events:

- Sunday
Last time I drove my car and I did not notice any issues

- Wednesday
Started my car and lights popped up to check for VGRS, power steering, DRS system, and ABS. Rpm dipped when AC was on, remained static if I turned off AC. Drove the car around the neighborhood and it was fine then parked it in the garage.

- Saturday
Still had lights for VGRS, power steering, DRS (no abs), but power steering went out this time - needed to use two hands to steer. No issues with rpm dipping with AC on.

- Monday
Replaced battery to cross it off the list and replace an abs sensor wire in the front passenger because I noticed that wire tore off. I still. Don’t have power steering. I can clear the codes (posted below), but U0131 still remains. I have checked all fuses related to power steering and they are fine.

Codes:
U0073
U0131
C1B09

What could be the issue? I can’t imagine the abs sensor wire tore off and the PS ecu frying at the same time. I’m at a lost and I don’t have to just throw parts at it.

Most common is a grounding issue or fuses. If your ABS sensor wire was 'torn off' was it by a squirrel/rodent? Look for other wire damage as those dam animals will eat lots of important wires, then check your fuses.

Agreed. Check your fuses. Also, I believe Techstream will attempt to talk to and verify if each ECU has power. Go through that process and see if everything is on the network.

Although the abs sensor wire isn’t chewed off (attached) - I think rats may have gotten into the wiring since I found some droppings on the motor block.

I think the next course of action is to have visible access to the PS ecu and follow the wiring to see if there are any damage to sleeves/wires. Not sure what else to do at this point. Last thing I’d do is get it towed to a mechanic and then get it towed back home if it’s too expensive.

Find a good old school Auto Electric shop that has modern updated equipment. They specialize in this, and can pin point the exact place the failure in the wiring or equipment is to be replaced.

@tekno2566 - You need to eliminate those wire-eating, poop-dropping varmints from having their way with your car or it'll be a totaled mess.

Yeah, confirmed it’s a vermin issue.

I’ve been trying for the past few days. Got a trap set up and some poison bait which they preferred the latter. Haven’t seen them in a couple of days, but I suspect there should be some in the attic still.

Well.. this is what I found by the power steering ECU. Trying to eliminate the vermin which seems to be the root cause, but what do y’all suggest how to wire this? It’s an extremely short length to the connector and I’m not of a mechanic than an electrician. Any advice would be appreciated!

I've soldered wires into encoder d-sub connectors. What you have there is an easy job for any electrician friends you may have.

For everyone else: Just cut that nub coming out of the connector where it's gnawed, cut to the other end where it's gnawed, slip on heat shrink (important!), then solder in an extension. Slip the heat shrink on and heat it up with the wife's hair dryer then take her out for a milkshake.

I'll be honest though, that ABS sensor wire break looked a little more like corrosion to me, but who knows what nasty crap they have in their mouths that'd oxidize copper.

Definitely get rid of the mice though asap. Poison works but then they die off somewhere and stink up the place sometimes. Traditional traps with peanut butter in the fulcrum works well... but crickets also like to eat the peanut butter out of the bait bin IME.

One of the wire is really short, maybe 1.5 inches long. I’m not an electrical person and don’t trust my soldering skills. What are your thoughts on using a t-tap and covering the opposite hole with liquid tape?

Temporary, sure. That'll get you to someone's house to solder it properly/troubleshoot your issue.

Anyone know what kind of pins/connectors these things use? Maybe he could repin and new wire in and swap it out and not have two solder joints?

I opened the white tab on the harness and heard it click. I’m not sure if I just need force to take it out due to the purple waterproof seal or if there is something I need to do on the male end (although there’s no indication) to release the pin

Have you looked up the part to just how you can just replace it the correct way? Maybe you can find it used? Or is it built into the main cars wire harness? If the cost is very high could you make a Insurance claim depending on the cost?

I’ve tried to look for it, but to no avail. I suspect it’ll cost around $300 which is less than my deductible. The sleeve is wrapped with a bigger sleeve which I assume is the the main harness, so passing in that as well.

I wanted to de-pin it to do a cleaner job, but worst case I can use a t-tap and run the wires that way. I’d rather not spend 100’s if it’s not necessary lol.

Also, found this on eBay, but this harness plugs into the opposite side of the ecu.

Yes that would be shipped from overseas and it's opposite side driving. Try car-parts.com. Also hit up some of the ebay seller that show wrecked GS pics, and ask if they have. For sure you can find it off a wrecked car on car-parts.com, just find a wrecked model and ask. Also look for someone that has a used Steering ECU. They had to take that harness out of it.

You can possibly repair it, but for $100, I would get a new/used part.
