Default Backup Camera Issue Resolution

I've been having an issue since I bought the car with the backup camera intermittently showing signs of interference. Also, about half the time when the trunk is open and closed, the signal is lost until the trunk is opened and closed again.

I recently installed a front camera interface from BeatSonic which allows the user to activate a front or the rear OEM camera through the OEM screen at any time on demand. With that tool, a real time view of the camera as I manipulate the trunk or harness is very helpful.

In preparation for a GS-F tail light swap, I removed the right side carpet liner where wire harness containing the camera signal runs. While looking at the camera output on the OEM screen, I pinpointed the issue to where the harness is retained by the plastic clip circled in blue.

The red arrow is pointing to the trunk hinge and to the rear. Once the harness was removed from the plastic retainer clip, the harness was now free to move as the trunk opens and closes. That solved the issue.

Hopefully this helps anyone else with this issue. As a side note, the ability to activate the rear camera on demand is very helpful for extra security at ATMs.

Thank you for sharing. This could be very helpful to me! I've brought my car back to the dealer 3 times for back up camera glitching or interference issues, but never losing the signal or blacking out. The first time they couldn't recreate it although I had it recorded on my phone. The second time they said that they re-initialized the camera to no avail. The third time they replaced the camera under CPO. Since the replacement I've only had one incident in almost a month. About a week ago while backing up with the trunk open, it started to glitch again. It hasn't happened since, but I'm going to take a look at this area to see if it was the cause originally. Through the whole process I told them that it looked like a wiring issue and not necessarily the camera itself. It reminded me of when laptop lcd cables start going bad or come loose from the connection to the screen partially from constantly opening and closing the lid.

Definitely worth the minimal time to remove the carpeting, expose the harness and start playing around. Having the camera on was very helpful. You can theoretically have someone you trust with your life place the car in reverse and hold the brake while you move the trunk/wires around to see if you can pinpoint the cause of the issue. Maybe place some ramps behind the wheels just in case. Much easier/safer with the BeatSonic interface though!

I had a dealer look at it as well. After explaining the issue in detail for a few minutes, the service rep placed the car in reverse, saw the backup camera turn on and said: "Its working fine". I quietly took the keys, said thank you and realized I was on my own with this!
