Hi all, I've got an odd one I can't take to the dealer...

​​​​​ At speeds above 83mph, I start getting a ticking in the driver side bpillar area. Almost sounds like a metallic tapping.

Obviously can't ask the dealer to address this because...you know, 83 mph....

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance

 

I think I've heard that noise on my car too. I first thought my boy left some toy on his booster seat behind me. I still couldn't figured out what the noise was.

What year is your car?

 

I had this issue when I had my 2013 and 2015. Told the dealer and they were able to put more insulation in the b-pillar area and damping material for the grab handles.

 

You can mention you heard it while you driving on one of those highways in Nevada without a speed limit.

 

.Texas has 85mph parkways too.lol

 

Its a 2013. Ugh, the dealer is so far away.

I'll disassemble the bpillar and felt line everything.

 

Could your metallic tapping sound also be described as sounding like wind noise?

going to dig up my old thread here.

So, i disassembled the bpillar, everything got taped in place or felted. Still ticking at about 80mph+. I think it might be aero related. The ticking occurs at a lower speed when driving into the wind and at higher speeds when there's a tail wind...

extremely annoying since its right at ear level....(or at least resonates at ear level)

 

Chances are good the ticking noise is coming from a different area or direction than what you think (hear). Sounds can easily travel (be transmitted) via open hollow channels or solid materials. I would look at the sunroof for a jiggle. Also, the rear view mirror has parts and mountings that can tick, hum and make noises both at idle as well as at speed. When you find it, you'll wonder how you missed it...

 

i'll try the sun roof tomorrow, maybe adjusting it up and down at speed may change the noise.

It really sounds like a piece of metal tapping on a piece of glass. very glass/metallic...

 

I have the same issue. Been driving me insane. Happens infrequently too so hard to diagnose at highway speeds.

 

try speeding, i can get mine to do is consistently over 78-79mph

There are no less than a gazillion people that have complained about a ticking noise in their B pillar in all sorts of vehicles when Google searching the topic.

 

I had a similar noise from the passenger side b-pillar. Turned out to be the seat belt buckle rattling against the hard plastic. A little black felt padding solved the problem.
