Default Lane keep assist error

My 2016 GS350 recently started displaying an error when I attempt to activate lane keep assist (I generally keep the feature off).

Dealer states the "steering vibration ECU" needs to be replaced and quotes $1267 for the job.

Anyone have experience with this? Is that a fair quote?

Do you have the actual code or error you get?

@sbowden99 - I don't have any experience of having a problem with the LKA feature. I keep the feature turned Off also.

If the Power Steering Vibration Computer Part Number 864A248011 is what is needed, it has a MSRP of $247.39.

You might be able to replace it yourself with one from a wrecked 4GS at far less than what you were quoted by your Lexus dealer's service department.

However, I do not know exactly where this part is located in the car, so it may be difficult to access, requiring the removal of the steering wheel and an alignment thereafter...

The following image was associated with the above listed part number, so I can only assume that replacement of the Steering Vibration Computer requires the removal of the steering wheel:

Assuming it's "just" the computer linked and paying full price for the part, it makes it 900 for labor, which seems... expensive, unless it's also including an alignment. But still...

Removing and replacing the steering wheel is a couple hours at most, assuming it's needed.

I think to replace the Vibration Computer might require the steering wheel buttons trim be removed...

@sbowden99 - Your Code C1A74 references the 'steering wheel vibration' feature, but can be caused the vehicle's wheel alignment or suspension system, with common causes being unbalanced tires, worn or damaged suspension components, or warped brake rotors.

So, the questions are:

Does your car have a vibration or wobble when driving from unbalanced tires?
Does your brake pedal pulsate when braking from wrapped rotors?
Has the car hit a curb or large pothole recently?
Has the car been involved in any accidents recently or had any type of shop work done recently?

To add on to this, pedal pulsation during braking is usually a result of the rear rotors being warped. If the front rotors are warped, it will result in the steering wheel shaking during braking. If all rotors are warped, you should get a combination of the two symptoms.

@sbowden99 - Was this 'Dealer' you sought help from and received the quote from a bona fide Lexus dealership's service department or some other place?

No to all above.

And yes, this quote came from a Lexus dealer.

If the Power Steering Vibration Computer Part Number 864A248011 is what is needed, it has a MSRP of $247.39. If this part is accessible under the dash near the steering column (I do not know that it is) then the quote of $1,268 seems way too high.

You may want to use the search feature to search all Lexus models here on Club Lexus to hopefully find out what it cost someone else to have the part replaced - and maybe learn where in the car this part is actually mounted.

I found this 3 year old post in the 4th Gen RX forum, but there were no replies to it:

From what I gathered, it requires removal of the steering wheel - just wondered if anyone has done it yet.

Thanks.

The Power Steering Vibration Computer PN 864A 248010/864A 248011 appears to maybe control both the steering wheel vibration for the LKA feature as well as the steering wheel heating element.

It appears that to replace this part, requires the steering wheel to be removed and/or removing the trim on the steering wheel that has the buttons, which likely explains the high quoted repair price relative to the price of the part.

You can get an idea of what is involved in replacing the LKA steering wheel vibration computer from these images of a 2013-2015 LEXUS GS OEM STEERING WHEEL TRIM with switches for the Lane Keep Assist and Dynamic Cruise Control features.

Thanks to the picture @bclexus posted, I went back and found what likely is the part when I took my steering wheel off.

Likely you'd need to take the switch cover off to access but I haven't done that.

Steps here, if interested. You should only need to do steps 1-6 (after reading the warning about disconnecting the negative terminal )

Honestly for the price of the part, I wonder if it would be easier to just get a new (used) steering wheel that already has the part integrated. Then it's just a simple steering wheel swap.
