Default AFS, VGRS, VSC, Traction Control - Steering Angle Sensor Module

Hi all,

First time poster here but loving the threads on the forum Hoping for a little help with diagnostics.

I currently have a GS450H with a few lights up on the dash - those being:

AFS
Check VGRS
Check VSC
Yellow exclamation mark
Red exclamation mark
Traction Control

Note that on a rare occasion, all of them completely disappear :O Assuming due to there being one culprit (one problem/issue that intermittently somehow manages to complete a circuit or similar).

Plugged into Techstream and getting the following DTC's:

AFS - B2414 Steering Position Sensor
Check VGRS - C1595 Lost Communication with Steering Angle Sensor Module
Check VSC - C1289 VGRS Control System Malfunction (assuming relating to the issue the VGRS is having with the steering angle)
Yellow exclamation mark - Alert to the issues above.
Red exclamation mark - Maintenance required.
Traction Control - Tied to the VGRS issue also.

As per the above, I would assume fixing the Steering Angle Sensor Module would be the go to.

My question is has anyone experienced the "lost communication with steering angle sensor module" then replaced the steering angle sensor module and found it had cured the issue? If not, what was replaced to cure the issue?

Any and all feedback would be great.

try replacing the fuses. Is your alternator voltage ok?

Thank you for the suggestion. I'll check the alternator voltage when I get home tonight. (I did fully charge the 12v battery to see if it made a difference - unfortunately it didn't) Have seen what it is like with a low battery though - every light on the dash lights up like a Christmas tree and have multiple error messages flashing up on the Odo. Will report back on the alternator voltages.

With regards to the fuses, I have checked the manual and can't seem to find anything on the steering angle module relating to the fuses - any idea which one it would be?

Thanks again.

P/S fuse normally. would check in the fusebox aswell for resistance?

C1595 Possible Causes:

Faulty Steering Angle Sensor
Steering Angle Sensor harness is open or shorted
Steering Angle Sensor circuit poor electrical connection
Faulty Steering Control ECU

Does your battery has enough CCA (cold crank amp)

Thank you - regarding the fuses though, there's quite a few other things that share the same circuits for the fuses that appear to be working fine.

Battery is the Panasonic battery recommended by Lexus (CCA would be suitable accordingly). Will have to check on the age of the battery and measure voltages etc - car starts, runs, drives ok at the moment.

Failing the battery and alternator, will be working my way through that list for the C1595 possible causes.

Curious to know if anyone else has had this exact issue though and what solved it ie: likelihood of it actually being the steering angle sensor or something else related to it instead ie: steering ECU?

I would test voltage with the car off/running and exam grounds. Maybe also inspect battery terminal by removing the terminals, cleaning them, and trace the grounds to make sure there tight and solid.

Did you end up figuring it out? I have the same issue, I just replaced the alternator because it was also going out and I thought that was the problem at first since my battery light was also on.

I did fix this problem on my car. It has been a while now and I don’t have this vehicle any longer so I cannot provide any pictures but I can explain what I did to fix the problem.

1. My particular problem was the lost of communication between the vehicle computer (in the passenger side, under the glove box) and the steering wheel angle sensor.

2. I removed the connector and did an ohm test at the computer side and found out that the break in the wire was at the steering angle sensor at the steering wheel. I can’t remember which wire it was or what reading it should be, but it was open. What I can tell you is that the connector at the computer is robust and not likely to be the problem area, so if your problem is like mine then the communication disconnect is at the steering wheel and not the computer side.

3. I removed the angle sensor at the steering wheel and took it apart and found cold/broken solder at the connector pins. There’s only a few wires there so I just re soldered all the wires at the connector and it fixed my problem.

In conclusion, if your problem is like mine then I would just take the steering wheel out, remove the steering angle sensor and re solder all the wires there and it should be good.

Hope this helps.
