Default advice / Mechanic to replace Lexus engine ?

Hello,

I'm unsure of what had happened, but the dealer is saying something went into the engine and I need a new one. Our 2006 Lexus GS300 is "only" 92K and we feel it's still new enough to try & salvage it.

I was quoted a used 2006 Lexus GS300 engine for ~ $1700 from an auto part store and the dealer is charging ~ $6500 to install it. I tried calling around and only have one shop that can do the engine replacement, but he wanted to inspect the car, which is currently undrive-able and at a dealership. I only paid $200 for the dealership to do the inspection and he said I only need a new engine. The shop also said they may need other parts to replace.

I have not had any luck finding another shop that can do the engine swap .... yet.

We purchased the car certified from another dealership and bought an extended warranty (we were naive back then) so we've sunk a shiny peny. I'm at a cross-road on whether to just junk and donate the car or have the engine replaced and get some mileage from it. Of course I don't know how good/reliable the used engine will be and i stumble into this link http://m.carcomplaints.com/Lexus/GS_...e/engine.shtml, which i may head into more headaches in the future

Thanks for your time/recommendation/advice.

Why do you need a new motor what was the cause and whats broken inside of the engine? Does the engine run at all? Was it due to carbon buildup?

Will the extended warranty not cover an engine replacement?

Also, a 2006 GS300 isn’t a particularly desirable car and almost $2k is a huge amount for a car with a value of like $5k.
That was just the price of the engine and not the cost to install it either. The total after purchasing an engine and cost of installing it will probably equal or exceed the value of the car itself.

IMHO, it's up to you if you want to go forward with the install and labor. You could probably find a nice GS350/430/460 for the same price.

But knowing that you have an extended warranty, I would find out what that warranty covers first. I would like to know what that something is that went into an engine that causes them to come up with an engine swap.

Yeah I agree I would definitely find out about that extended warranty that you paid for. And fight for them to pay for repairs too. Sometimes they deny but you just need to fight for it. And yeah for that price I'd probably get a GS350. Much more powerful engine and very very efficient too.

Please dont spend 6K on 2006 GS300.It would never make financial sense as these cars sell for 5k-6k max.You can sell it as is for 2k & buy a 2007 GS350 or 460 if you can stretch your budget.

You could say this for pretty much any car. Would I want to spend 5k to do an 1JZ engine swap on an '85 Toyota Cressida? Hell yea. The car itself is probably not worth 5k but people do it all the time.

But in this specific scenario he is swapping in another engine of the same type where the total cost of that swap either meets or exceeds the total value of the car. He could just buy a whole other GS300 for the same price or even a better GS350 for the same price. There would be no advantage to doing the engine replacement on his GS vs buying a complete GS350. The GS350 as a whole makes much more sense.
