Got bored this weekend and my friend was bugging me about painting my rims black so decieded I would use something temp like plasti dip to see how it looks but when I got to the store I found this similar stuff from Dupli Color called Custom Wrap.
I ended up doing the driverside with plasti dip and the passenger side with dupli colors custom wrap. 5 coats each. I read alot of reviews on both paints and I couldnt go off the reviews so I'm doing my own comparison to which holds up better.
From what I can tell the plasti dip seems more durable but the finish isnt as smooth as the dupli colors. So I'll update over time..
I like the look alot just thought I would share.
Over the winter I'm thinking about geting the 18" stock wheels over the 17"s I have now and I want to get them powdercoated black so its more glossy then the current finish.
Looks like you sprayed the lug nuts too. If so it will come off when removing them. other than that it looks good.
I took all 4 wheels off and I painted the lugs and center caps seperate.
I just took off the dupli colors custom wrap off the passenger side last night... funny to see a reply today.
Anyways I redid it with plasti dip because it was just more durable.. when the plasti dip is all dry putting on the lugs leaves minimal marks I just do a touch up spray when its on. I literally just did is lastnight ill post a close up of it
How did you paint them on? Did u use a primer ? Any tips or instructions? Ur work looks awesome!
Yea theres 2 ways you can do it, paint them while the wheels are on the car or take the wheels off. I chose to take them off because it gives you more space and angles to spray it from.
So I actually used some light scotch bright and went over all the surfaces I was going to paint just a few scrubs all over nothing extreme then I cleaned them off really good you can barely notice its been scrubbed thats how light I did it and dried them off. I sprayed a total of 6 to 7 coats per wheel the 1st few coats were very light just to build a nice base before adding a heavier coat. I used a fan to help dry them between coats I waited until the paint looked flat in car or dry so about 10 to 15 min. Look at tips on youtube if you haven't used a spray can before I have the technique down pretty good because Ive used alot of spray cans in my time. I'm really happy with how mine turned out.
looks good. I think I'll plasti dip my sons wheels to dress them up. Where do you get it at?? Thanks
Alot of places carry it, menards, walmart, or any auto paint store. I paid about 6 or 7 bucks a can and I used a can per wheel the more coats you put on the easier it is to remove in the future if you wanted to
