I am looking into getting my black '09 350 tinted. Right now it is like a rolling greenhouse. What would be a good brand and % to go with? I talked to a shop that uses American Standard who says they can do it for $250 while another shop that uses Suntek will do it for around $400. Thoughts?
just saying but ive never payed more than 150 to get a tint done unless your getting your front windshield done too. my buddy got his gs done for $115 with 15% all around. anything that dark is illegal for the front windows, at least here in TN. mine came with my GS when i bought it and they are 35% i think its perfect.
location can play a factor but i got my civic done in California for $80 at a local shop... and they used 3M tint
i dont know tint brands but if anything i would go with whats familiar to me.
In Ohio you currently can't go below 50% on the fronts, but can be completely black on the back windows for a passenger vehicle.
Any licensed shop adheres to that law, so don't be surprised if a shop tells you no to anything darker.
My GS has 50 on the fronts, 20 on the rears and it's a little unbalanced. 35 on the rear would have been better because the front had to be so light. I think I paid about 250-300 for all door windows and rear window. We pay more in Ohio compared to southern states just based on volume/demand.
When I did my IS, the front law was like 40, so I have 40 on the front and 20 on the rear.
As for the brand - if the shop guarantees it then you should be fine. It's the crap people buy at Autozone for $10 that turns purple after a few days!
Not sure what brand I got, but I paid about 200. 35% all the way around looks great and with the legal limit being 50% I didn't want to push my luck too far
when i was originally in the market for tint on my LS, i researched more about the tint used and the shop rather then the cost. imo, for $50 extra its worth the higher quality tint and better install.
so for my GS, i went to the same place that used solar gard tint (recommended by the skin cancer foundation) and did 50% up front with 35% in the rear. something subtle and sleek.
edit: here's a pic the day i got the tint done

Reason: added pic
@icybishop I spoke to a shop yesterday that said the limit is actually changing to 35% all around within the next month or so.
@uberej Thanks I think I will go with the suntek cxp
@sprtn131 I think I will go with 35% all around as well as I don't want it to be difficult to see at night. Do you have any pics of yours?
@mr. tetsuo that is a fine looking vehicle and the 50% doesn't look as light as I thought it would. Personally I want the same tint % on all windows. Heat protection and privacy are my main reasons.
Do you guys recommend the tinted strip on the windshield?
Films $125 and up are pretty much perform all the same. If you park the car in the sun, your car is still going to be an oven, but tint allows you to cool your car faster. Cheaper tint may develop clarity issues over time.
If you plan to keep the car for a long time, go with the tint that has the best warranty, and make sure the installer gives you the proper documentation in case you need the warranty.
I recently had to get my tint replaced due to adhesive failure. Got it fixed at no charge to me under manufacturer lifetime warranty, which allows me to take it to any dealer to get it fixed. My original installer no longer carried the brand.
Depending on how much competition there is, tint should not be that expensive. Keep looking.
