So Monday, driving back on the 8 East from San Diego near Pine Valley, I had a blowout on rear passenger side tire. Pull over, lift the car up and take the tire off to find this:



I say wtf...? The tires are basically brand new. I put the never used spare on and basically limp home to Yuma at 40mph.

3 1/2 hrs later, I get home, take the spare off and notice it to, is literally down to the medal on the interior portion. Also, when holding the rotor with both hands you can literally move it up and down, so I'm thinking, even though I'm the furthest thing from a seasoned suspension mechanic, something's up here.

Upon further inspection, I found this:



The bolt attached to the coilovers was loose and the one to the right could basically be pulled out with my fingers and it had no nut.

Anyone ever seen this before?

I hope not. Bought these back in Apr 2012 and had them installed soon after.

 

Havent had any type of work lately? If not, then seems that it took its time loosening up... its good to hear that its not worse than it was.

Those are the two bolts that I loosened to install my coils...

 

The bolt don't loosen itself if it were properly install correct? Ideally it shouldn't even move.

Anyway, consider yourself lucky. 40mph with one wheel falling off could....... I don't want to think about it.

When you reinstall those nuts, you could either use Grade 8 Ny-locks (you'll probably have to go to a specialty hardware store for those), loc-tite blue or head to Lexus (they're probably prevailing-torque nuts). The blow-out could have occurred from a few excess degrees of camber caused by the loose nuts/bolts. It would've been riding on the edge of the sidewall.

There's a high probability that they weren't torqued to spec, or, they subbed in incorrect nuts (ie, non-prevailing-torque). I'd send them the bill if you don't end up doing it yourself. Send them the bill for you tire, too

You're sooo lucky! Good to hear nothing "bad" happened.

 

You're very lucky it was not worse. Did you hear anything odd while driving? Or did the car feel loose at all in the rear while on the highway?

 

Yup poor install! Someone forgot to torque down those bolts, I would recheck all the suspension bolts and do a wheel alignment.

 

WOW thats scary man.

that's bad installation, whoever did the install didn't propperly tighten down the bolts and nuts so it caused your wheel to sit at a weird angle with the toe and camber out of wack.

caused your wheel to drag against the road and eat the inner tire completely to the wire.

i always recommend to check your on coil-overs every few months to make sure nothing vibrated loose.

 

Isn't this tire wear and failure normal for hellaflush cars? If not hellaflush ignore my post.

That type of camber wear is normal but here is the thing.

You need to make sure to have a alignment every few months so that your toe is in correct specs.
