Default Exhaust Question

What am I missing here? From what I've read the axle back exhaust don't really add any performance, they're just for sound. Why can't I just swap out the mufflers at a muffler shop, and add some tips like the S2000 tips? Even if they cut the mufflers off and welded the new ones on, it still seems like it would be cheaper than dropping a grand for some of these axle back exhausts.

I'm sure I'm missing something but what?

It will probably sound really raspy if you cut the mufflers off and added tips.

Depends what car you have, you could probably get away with it if you had a V8, but a V6 will probably sound like a fart can.

But don't take my word for it, I don't have a V6.

What you could do is have an exhaust shop custom make a mid pipe for you, I believe that's where the sound is, not the mufflers ironically.

The engines are designed to have some back pressure so if you remove the mufflers the torque would decrease as well.

Very common mistake people make!

Cars DO NOT need back pressure, back pressure is not good for exhaust!

What you need is the correct exhaust velocity, this is determined by width of pipe!

The last thing you need is back pressure because back pressure may result in reversion of exhaust stream!

Totally disagree. If you watch any of the tuning, horsepower, mechanic, etc shows on cable, you'd know that you'd lose torque when reducing back pressure.

There are some really nice looking 3GS exhaust systems on eBay (polished mufflers & tips) for between $250-300 shipped. Not name brands but for 1/3 the cost still sweet looking and very tempting.....

OP said have a muffler shop swap out mufflers - not remove them altogether....
