Unhappy So my lexus left me stranded :( UPDATED!!!!!

So driving home from dinner, pulled up to a light and noticed smoke coming underneath my car. I opened my window and it smelled like burned oil I got scared pulled over right away, turned off the car, got my flash light and checked under neath my car. Noticing black oil leaking from front differential area. My whole bottom of the car all the way to the end is in black oil. Checked engine oil the level is good. Now I am assuming this is my differential that took a crap on me because tranny oil is usually reddish/pink and engine oil is brown. Called lexus road side assistance and had the car towed to nearest lexus. I have extended warranty on the car so I am not worried about the bill. I also still have remaining power train warranty which my case is power train. You guys would probably guess I hit something but I didn't. When I looked under my car there was no damage nor did I feel any sort of a bang while driving. Question is what have caused this? What color is differential fluid? Only have 1 pic and that's the car being on the tow truck . I had it towed to lexus and parked it outside as lexus is closed today Saturday and Sunday. So first thing on Monday morning I am going to give it in to lexus.

diff fluid should look the same as your oil. my guess is the seal may have gone bad. but it could be a few different things that went wrong. probably a rare incident and glad its going to be covered under warranty

I think this calls for an LFA as a loaner

It sucks and it's great at the same time..... If you broke it, you get a new trans, if it's just leaking oil, you get a new refresh of oil free of charge

just a new transfer case/diff if anything. Hardly doubt the trans will have any issues from this. And since the OP pulled over when it was still leaking I would bet that there is no damage and they will replace the seal or transfer case (possibly damaged) add fluid and call it a day. I just hope that the transfer case isn't damaged from say a rock or something that wasn't visible in the dark. My dad had that happen on a BMW years ago and it hit the bolt at the right angle and snapped it off and shot the entire diff and they made him eat the entire expense.

No i havent changed the front or back differential fluid as it is not required by the book, that shouldnt be the cause for it to pour out of the front differential area. As i said earlier it looked like it was from front differential it can be tranny for all i know. Everything will be found out tommorow.

UPDATE: brought in the car at 11 am waited for 4 hours they come back telling me they have bad news and good news. Well start with the bad news my transmission is leaking oil, no physical damage anywhere it something internal that wen't wrong. Good news i am still under 6yrs and 70000 miles powertrain warranty and have lexus platinum extended warranty. It is being fully covered under the warranty should be done in a week or so as they need to special order a brand new transmission. The car drove fine before the oil started leaking, no hard shifts , no slipping ,none of the common sinus that lead to tranny problem. So now i am stuck with the famous ES loaner. They were all shocked as this is not a common problem but the test drive guy told me they have done 1 tranny before on a 3gs. This is exactly why i bought a lexus not to have to deal with tranny or engine issues as they are known to be bullet proof.

leaking tranny, not good but at least you are getting a new tranny, just make sure it's not a rebuilt one. you are in good hands
