Question HELP!!! Drip Molding Peeling!

Help CL....

Over the weekend I was attempting to detail me car and install my HID Fogs when I noticed that the "Drip Molding" on the right side of my 07' GS350 was peeling. It looks almost like some type of thin cheap painted tape.

Here are the pics...

When I took it to Lexus of Cherry Hill, they told me that they were "puzzled" and that a service tech that has been there since 1989 has never seen this before. Asked if the car was involved in any accidents......

The car was purchased from a lease. All service records come from Lexus w/ a clean CarFax.

I'm so confused and need any help that I can get. I searched the boards and found 1 post, but no pics.

Thanks CL.....

I have never seen this either. I could always tell that that piece isn't really fastened very well and it's plastic, but the paint peeling like that is just not what I would expect from Lexus.

Let us know what the dealer plans to do. Can't imagine it would cost very much to order new pieces and re-spray those...

I will keep the board posted on what they plan to do. The piece seems super cheap.

could be with a way you are polishing and waxing the car. there is a debate about this right now in the ES forum.

To be honest...this is my 1st time attempting to detail my car. I just purchased my GS350. I used to detail my 2nd Gen GS300 all the time.

But I will see if I can talk to a body shop about removing them and repainting them over.

umm, i am not 100%, but somehow i recall reading that it's painted sticker type of material over the drip molding? or is it painted plastic? looking at the picture, it's hard to imagine that's pain peeling, that's a big piece of paint peeling without chips.

hope they replace them soon

This has been discussed before. Yeah, apparently it is tape over a chrome/shiny metal trim piece. Some people have actually removed the painted tape and polished up the metal underneath. Lexus also used the painted tape trick on the 2GS.

ah there you go, seems like it's tape on top of the molding and then painted. that can explain the kind of peeling in the pictures.

Thanks for all the great suggestions....

I think that I will just take them to a body shop and get them to paint them and put them back on. I believe that will be the best fix.

I had taken my Smk Grnt in to the dealer and showed them the peeling issue and I got a regional service mgr to look at it. 3 weeks later, I got both replaced under warranty. I have an 07. The replacement parts actually came from Japan. The matched really really welll to be honest.
