Default Cam Gears Replaced

CL Members:

Upon hearing rattling (sounded like valvetrain noise) noises when starting the car in the morning took it in for warranty work.

Amazingly enough the dealer was able to duplicate the noise and therefore are replacing both Cam Gears under warrant.

Definitely a big job and thankfully i will not incur an expense over this repair.

The dealer hear in Las Vegas has always been top notch when it comes to warranty issues and it was no different with this experience.

Just a fyi for all this that are experiencing this same issue.

Good luck

When I pull up to a drive through and the sound echoes off the wall, I can hear a ticking from the engine, which I attributed to the direct injection system. It is quiet inside the cabin, but when I open the window I can definitely hear ticking. I plan on asking the dealership to look into it when I get back from the "stan"

If you start the engine, put the hood up and listen near the injection system itself (versus the block), you can hear the ticking... it's very different than a valve noise which is somewhat harsh and high pitched, or cam noise which is more metallic and rough sounding. YMMV, but I had them check mine GS3 when it was newer for that exact noise, pulled one of the showroom floor to compare and they both do it...

As "dunnojack" says, they all does it.... You can call me ray, or you can call me jay, or you can call me.....

The engine purposely uses direct injection as much as possible when idling or driving in order to heat up the exhaust system to the right temperature. That is part of why it is certified as ULEV II. So you will hear it more when the engine is cold. I find the noise normal considering it does this. Never have experienced the rattle though...

I agree, the same goes with my direct injection 997 C4S...very different noise compared to a rod knock, or a valve noise.
