GS350 vs. Hyundai Genesis ???

Cars like anything, are a status symbol item, just like the clothing we wear and the houses we own...
It's all about feeling good about where you're at and showing that "hey other people, I've made it to a higher level of comfort in life..."
The same for the typical MB/BMW/Lexus owner, we've reached a level in our lives where we want to drive a "better" automobile with a higher status symbol. Some would say "that's stupid" but I ask you then, do you still own a 19" tube TV? It's still just a TV, why buy a 60" flat LCD? Do you drive a Hyundai Elantra? It's just as good as any other car with four wheels and an engine. Do you buy clothing from Wal-mart, it's still the same cotton and polyester as any other manufacturer ? If not, then don't saying buying a "luxo" vehicle is stupid, it's just a status symbol, like everything else we choose to buy...

To nit-pick your examples, the only people that know anything about my TV are the sales person and the cable guy...that's "just as a status symbol?"

My late $.02.
I personally think the Genesis will succeed. Following Superbowl, I had decided on it. If it had come out sooner, there's a good chance I wouldn't have looked any farther.
I considered a number of cars prior to my GS purchase and had really all but settled on different ones at different times. I could very easily be driving an Avalon or RL right now. I gave very strong consideration to the TL, G35, Altima, Camry, and Accord as well--much less to BMW and Benz.
That said, while the Genesis is IMO a good looking car, I like/prefer every single interior and exterior styling aspect of the GS more than the Genesis (possible exception of the straight on rear view). How a car looks (to my taste) is at the top of my list.

I have had many problems with an 06 Cadillac STS, the car was in the shop for 5 weeks, they never gave me a Cadillac loaner, they BS'ed through the entire ordeal. The customer service department treated me like an idiot, they tried to get me to believe they were replacing my rotors and pads as an act of kindness for all the troubles I had been through. This was not usually covered under warranty, those idiots didn't realize that I had gotten a service bulletin requiring replacement from GM a week earlier. The gas tank was completely empty when I got it back 5 weeks later, and tell them to fill it back up, they make me sign some sort of "goodwill Form" to get my gas back. This is Freeway-Cadillac Mazda, Riverdale, Utah, by the way. I complain to the service manager about the idiots he has running his service department, he tells me to never come back, he doesn't want me as a customer anymore. Well, I figured he would be used to that by now. All this from him after bad rotors, seats, sun roof, leaking differential, memory loss, broken trim, and vents, bad mirror motors, bad motor in tilt steering, strange noises from suspension, or front end, strange whine from windows, whistling in the windows, and the car was completely dead twice, no reason at all, they could not diagnose, etc. I am sure you guys get the point. So, onto the real story, I called customer service, they were located in India! Two months later, I call back, I get a crack pot in the Phillipines. If this is what I get for my car dollars, I have had it. I will not be buying another Corvette (new), but will be looking into a Viper. I know, probably worse, but I want to give them a chance to fail. It's like the saying "Keep quiet, and be thought a fool, then to open your mouth, and remove all doubt" GM has removed all doubt, but Dodge has yet to speak. This is what GM has done to me, made me a convert. I was a dyed in the wool GM fan, no longer. I was probably a Corvette fan, never really liked GM.

Every car is interesting to somebody and its owner, saying the Genesis in not interesting in an opinion not a fact!
The thing is, regardless of whether anyone here personally believes the Genesis is equal to the GS doesn't matter. Here we have a car that is $15-20k less than the GS, yet offers a better warranty, a roomier interior, similar fuel economy/emissions, and very comparable feature content. Of course, the GS has a couple things the Genesis doesn't have such as available AWD & an 8-speed auto on the V8, while the Genesis has a few things not available on the GS, such as dual-pane laminated side window glass, uv resistent leather steering wheel, HD music storage, etc. Still, the Genesis is a remarkable acheivement regardless of who makes it. I can't think of ANY other car that does so many things as well as the Genesis. It's quick, roomy, solidly built, amazingly quiet, feature-laden, nicely styled, and affordable (relatively speaking).
If you're in the market for a sporty and luxurious full-size sedan for around $40k, and aren't concerned with impressing the Joneses, I can think of few (if any) better cars than the Genesis. Out of the 13 cars I've owned (including BMW, Cadillac & Lexus), none have suprised me as much the Genesis. Nothing Hyundai has built up to this point, including the very good Veracruz, Sonata & Azera, prepared me for just how good the Genesis would be. It's the kind of vehicle that keeps suprising you with it's attention to detail and solid build quality.
Either way, I'm glad you're happy with your GS. At the end of the day, all that matters is how you feel about your car. Who really cares what anyone else thinks, right? Maybe it's just me, but this is how I feel and part of the reason why purchasing a Hyundai wasn't an issue for me.
