Default Mileage RANGE Accuracy!!!

Hey GS-ers,

As many of you know, one of the features of the GS is that it tells you how many miles you can drive before you need to fill up your tank. My question is how accurate is this? My car is telling me I have about 2 mile driving range left! I am wondering if I can even make it to the gas station that's about 3 miles away or should I go get myself a gas container and fill it up? I'm hoping that the figure is conservative! Do you guys know? Have you ever gone to the 1 mile level? Some cars have a "reserve" gas that is not reflected in the gas meter...could this be the case?

no it's not correct, it's always on the conservative side. there are reserves in the tank. my suggestion? don't test the limit

My very informal estimates from "going low" on the range till empty agree w/ rominl.... seems to be about 1.5 - 2.0 gallons remaining when nearly empty.... you should make it to the gas station, but hey, don't ever let it get that low ;-)

I drove about 18 miles after it told me I had cruising range of 0, and when I filled up, it took 16.7 gallons....meaning tank still had 1.5+ gallons if I recall the capacity correctly. I am sure you dont want the tank getting too low but

Calculate it the old fashioned way after a fill up. Miles Driven/Gallons Filled = MPG

I picked up my GS from service and the mileage meter was turned on. I didn't have it on before. How do you turn the approx. mileage off? Thanks.

I always figure i have 2 gallons remaining. Very often, i just figure when it hits zero, i go up to about another 20 miles. I have never had a problem. Same as above, it will then take about 16.7 gallons.

That's pretty impressive -18 miles after it hit 0 (NOT that I want to push the limits of my GS and be stranded on the road, but it's good to know the limitations of your car, you know?)

And if I did my math correctly, you're saying that the GS has a tank capacity of 18.2 gallons?

Its never good to run your gas tank that low.

When I picked mine up, the Ray Catena Lexus "customer service" guy (retired uncle of the owner I would guess) was very specific about the reserve in the GS models. He told me that at zero miles range, the built in reserve was good for approx. 20 more miles. He said Lexus does this with all their vehicles, so people won't run out. I previously owned a '98 LS400 that I once took down to 0 miles and still was able to get 15 miles till a gas station appeared. I sweated that one out, big time.

I Had an RX400H that only had a warning light no range in miles. I was somewhere in Texas when I noticed the light was on but had no idea how long it was on and how far the nearest station was. It scared the heck out of me. Keep in mind both the RX and GS hybrid have warnings about trying to drive with no gas in the tank. You get three tries to drive it and if after the third try if there is no gas the car goes into lockown mode. At that point the dealer is the only one that can start it and you can bet it will not be cheap.
