Default Sport Mode & Gas Usage

Hey Guys,

If I cruise around in my ride with "Sport" mode engaged, will I use up more gas? I definitely can tell the difference with this option engaged. Feels like the car is faster, more responsive, and powerful. I'm thinking I do use more gas as a result. Thoughts?

How often do you guys use this option. In the year and a half I've had the car, I can probably count on two hands the number of times I've turned on the "Sport" mode.

You do use more gas because first I believe the shift points are higher and second because when I have it in power mode it's because I want to get what you describe, more power, better response, better acceleration. That kind of driving naturally reduces economy. Usually I drop below 18mpg avg when I use it. I use it "as needed" which may be 5-10 times in a week.

I often drive with it on for weeks at a time, and sometimes I go back and forth, it is as if it is a different car at times....I actually like the regular mode quite a bit, shifts at a lower rpm, makes the car feel more confident, like it does not have to rev way up to get going, i dunno

I always leave sports mode on because I like the way it shifts better. I average 20 MPG (mix of hwy & street driving).

Sports mode or do you mean ECT PWR mode? Using ECT PWR mode puts the transmission into a more agressive shift pattern, hence better throttle response and of course helps hold the gear longer toward redline. You will notice a decrease in fuel economy unfortunately.

I use ECT PWR mode when I have people in the car with me, or if i'm doing some backroad twisty driving. Most of the time it's on ECT NORM.

MPG will drop a decent amount. Kinda makes me wonder if I'll save more gas using snow mode... =D

That wont work. We have several threads in the 1IS and 2GS sections where people have done this, including myself. There is no gas savings using snow mode unfortunately. You can save gas by keeping your engine speed below 3.5-3k at each shift.

I've had it on for about a month or two now. Last fill-up was still 22 MPG. The fuel economy doesn't go down that much as long as you're still driving the same way. I floor it mostly when I need to.

You are exactly right. I was referring to ECT PWR in my comments as "Sport" mode. I appreciate the fact that this car has this mode. You can have power on demand or choose to cruise along on days you want to kick back.

I don't see a difference in the gas mileage just from the setting. I use ECT Power all the time, I prefer the added responsiveness of the engine/transmission with that setting.

I see MPG differences from temperature changes (drops in colder weather), traffic conditions, and type of driving (city vs. highway)

I just had to add here: I was hauling around 4 other passengers in my GS this weekend. Switched to the ECT Power mode. Can I say the responsiveness is sweeeet!?! Power and Torque on demand! Felt like a fast and powerful sports car =)

Wow, 25 mpg average with an 06 GS300? What kind of driving do you do?

I have to admit to being somewhat out of touch on what's really typical. I had a 8 that averaged 17.5 mpg (majority city) and moved to a 8 in the 430 that seems to be averaging about the same with the same commuting and use.

That R&T article on the long term 450h had the average on that at 25.2.

Regular 60% city / 40% highway driving. Gotten my tank average up to 28+ before many times on 90% highway before, but kinda hard to do that too often living in Los Angeles. Minimal A/C usage though.
