and i think quite a few more cars out there can do this, 3 series, 5 series, c class and e class (i am pretty sure about 3 series)

i can never understand why this is so much of a trouble for lexus, especially when they have the button already. the ls460 folds automatically....

not to mention this feature is sooo old school in a lot of other countries
NOPE YOU'RE WRONG, 3 SERIES DOES NOT HAVE IT. I WENT TO THE DEALER AND ASK THEM ABOUT IT, THE MIRRORS FOLD BUT IT DOESN'T AUTOMATICLY FOLD ONCE ENGINE IS SHUTS OFF.

Shesh.. no need to yell. As for old school, maybe old school is good school. If there is no reason for you to fold the mirror, why have it fold EVERY time the engine is off? The more times you cycle through moving parts, the more likely they are to fail. If I only park from my garage, to work garage, and back and I don't parallel park, why have the mirrors fold? I don't see this function in U.S. as a necessity, more a "good to have."

You only got half right...

Yes, 3 series will not auto fold the mirrors when engine is shut off.

But if you did fold the mirrors manually when parked, it will unfold the mirrors when you go above 15 or 20 MPH... Oh yeah, on 3 series you cannot fold the mirrors while in motion, unlike our GS'.

i've actually observed the opposite on lots of electronics I've owned.

i.e if you don't use it, it breaks faster.

so now, i like to think that using the part 'exercises' it and prevents it from getting rusty.

That could be true in some respects too. A car that sits around tends to run less efficient than a car that's constantly in service. Although I think used every single time the engine is shut on/off is beyond just normal use and will cause the mirrors to fail at some point.

Thats why we have warrenty. To cover things that break. By your same rule of thought, my driving lights should fail really quick as every time I start my car, it comes on. Being that its a bulb, failure rate should be very high.
