Default engine covers - remove? pros and cons

I Searched the forums and couldn't find much about this question. I have a 06 GS300 and I was just wondering what your opinions are about removing the plastic engine compartment covers. I was thinking about taking them all off because I am the type that likes to see the motor bay so that I can detect possible problems early (ex. cracked belts, hoses, noises, fluid leaks etc.) Does it help to keep the heat off of the hood and thus protect your paint? Is there any draw back to taking them off? Are the covers purely cosmetic or do they actually serve some function? Let me know what you guys think. I really learn a lot from CL forums. Thanks and appreciate any feedback.

They are primarily for looks, sound insulation, and the ones on the side, for routing water away from everything. You can take them off, but it won't be too pretty in there in a few months. Not to mention you'll probably hear more of the ticking from the fuel injectors.. Personally, I love the clean look, and they come off in a 2-3 minutes with those punch clips anyway..

You'll also get your hood dirty. dunno about yours, but my '07 has a nice felt insulator on inside of the hood. I'm guessing that would get very dirty. And yup it does make a sound and heat difference. I drove without it for a bit to adjust my lights and the hood does get alot warmer with it off.
