Default Dealer Oil Changes For your 3GS

A question for the 3GS owners. DO you guys get your regular oil changes from the Dealership. I do. But i was thinking about the $70+ charge for a regular oil change (non-synthetic) is kinda high. I pay the same amount for MOBIL 1 synthetic for my 2GS. @ EZ LUBE . What do you guys think?
Please don't say that since i bought a $50K+ car (bought it in 03/05) i should be ok with $70 oil changes. If i had that way of thinking than i would have bought a CLS.

I have not purchased the 3GS yet but I am curious to know whether or not the oil filter for this car is readily available from Walmart/Autozone/Advane AutoParts etc.. If so, I plan to do the oil changes in house and save some green.

For that matter, I have not yet had to change the oil on my LS yet, are filters for the 01-03 LS430s available aftermarket??

TO answer your question, IMO $70 is a bit steep, But Lexus service is what it is. I don't know, $70 may be in line with what the average Lexus dealer charges.

I think taking you car into the dealer for any reason beside something major is definately not worth it. That is how major companies make there money.

I'm going to be changing my own oil/filter from now on. I had it done at the dealer for the complimentary 5k service, but I refuse to pay $120 for subsequent visits when all it consists of is an oil change and tire rotation. Local auto parts stores should carry oil filters for the 3GS. I'll find out soon because I'm already past 10k.

$70 does seem steep, but at the same time, I'm pretty sure that the GS would probably use the same filter kit that the ES350 now uses. It's not the standard all in one piece metal twist-on twist-off type. There's a casing and then internal filter elements that you change at the same time. I believe the part number is 04152-YZZA1 which is just the internal element and a gasket.

If this is the case, then you may not be able to find comparable parts at Pepboys/Autozone and Jiffy Lube places may not carry the parts either. Plus, with horror stories that you hear about these quick lube places not even replacing your filter... $70 or $30, is $40 worth your piece of mind for a $50K vehicle?

If you have the right tools to change your own oil and you have free time, then why not do it yourself, but then you have to figure in your own time to replace the oil and filter and time is money right? I have changed the oil in all my cars since buying them and I do it more for fun than real money savings, although there is savings.

i never take my cars to dealers for something as simple as oil changes because you almost always have to make an appointment then you dont know if its going to take them all day because there are alot of cars or should you wait 1-2 hours for it? i just take it to a oil changing place here where they let my track my oil changes online and add any other maintenance i have done and at what mileage and its saved there.

Has anyone with the 430 engine changed their own filter? I'm in a 02 LS looking to do my first oil change in a month or so. It would be nice to know whether or not the 430 filter is a regular screw on or the complex casing system described above.

Lets do our homework here. I'll post what I find, if someone knows this please post.

I believe the 430 is a regular screw on filter, while the 300 uses the special Toyota/Lexus filter element in which you have to open the filter enclosure to get to. I think I'm going to try doing it on my next change. Doesn't seem TOO hard.
