My car is a little over 6 months old with approx. 2960 miles. I would like to use synthetic motor oil when I get my first maintenance and continue to use synthetic oil.

1) When should I bring my car in for the first maintenance (3K miles/6 months or 5k miles/12 months)?

2) What's the ideal synthetic motor oil to use?

3) If I use synthetic oil what should the change intervals be?

FYI, I live in the SF Bay Area and the car is always garaged and rarely driven.

 

I have a 7 month old 06 GX470 with only 3300 miles on it. I changed the oil and filter myself at 1,000 miles to get the break in stuff out. I will probably go back to the dealer soon to have the 6 month/6,000 mile free service done. Then at about 6,000 miles, I will switch over to Amsoil 5W-30 synthetic oil and change it every 6,000 miles. My vehicle is always garaged and being retired, I don't put many miles on a vehicle in a year.

 

I'm the complete opposite of you. I drive a LOT...about 25,000 per year so I don't need to service my car until about every 6-7k miles. Here is my question..do most people here have the dealer service their car? I have a great indepandent shop I used for my old 99 gs 300 I was shocked to find their quote for my 15k service was 60.00 higher than the dealer quoted me. The dealer near me quoted me 385 for the 15k service.
