LOS ANGELES -- Lexus executives have long envied BMW and Mercedes-Benz for the great press they get when they alternate sheet metal and powertrain changes on their vehicles every few years.

Lexus traditionally has changed sheet metal and powertrains at the same time. Now that's changing.

The company will upgrade the engines on both versions of the GS sedan within a year.

This fall, the GS 300, equipped with a 3.0-liter V-6, will get a 3.5-liter V-6 and be renamed the GS 350. It's more than a displacement bump; the GS 350 engine is part of a new engine family also used in the IS 350 sedan.

The 4.3-liter V-8 engine in the GS 430 will be bumped to 4.6 liters in spring 2007. The new model will be called the GS 460.

The GS was redesigned for the 2006 model year, so it is not due for new sheet metal for another five years or so.

Lexus is waiting for the redesigned 4.6-liter engine to debut in the LS 460 flagship this fall before moving it into other vehicles. The LS 460 will have an eight-speed automatic transmission. A Lexus source did not know if that transmission would carry over to the GS 460 as well.

Last month, Lexus confirmed that it was boosting the V-6 engine's displacement in the RX 330 SUV to 3.5 liters. That vehicle shares the engine with the Lexus ES 350 sedan. The V-6 engines in the IS and ES are mounted differently: the ES transversely, the IS longitudinally.

Default bye bye 430, hello 460...

I will trade in my blk/blk 06 430 for either a flint mica/gray or silver/gray 460 when that happens. Love the black exterior, but too hard to keep up. Wish the black interior came with the black wood. And, the 430 still is just not that great a performer. I'll deal with the losses...

I am going to bet the GS 460 stays at the same base price as the current model, the usual up 1/2%. So around $52,000/$53,000

My goodness, I just read the Lexus estimate for the GS 350, which is usually conservative. That will easily be the fastest 6 cylinder in class.

Wow, I don't know what to say

There is alot of excitement over the new GS 350 and GS 460 and I can't wait till they come out. It's just a matter of time. Both GS's will be pretty fast in their respectable classes. Maybe I'll sell my GS 300 to get the GS 460. We'll see...

I too expect that the base GS460 MRSP will be close to that of the current GS430 base MSRP with a general 1 year price increase. I took this into consideration when I purchased my 06 GS430 a couple of weeks ago. I did not want to wait for the GS450h and decided against it after reading the reviews and discovering only a 5.2 0-60 (was expecting sub 5 based on the original hoopla from Lexus). On top of that I decided it might not be a wise move to buy the first model year of the hybrid just in case they needed to work out any kinks. So that left me with the GS460 which I expect will get down close the the hybrid for 0-60 without the price differential (I expect a loaded 450h like my 430 with MSRP at $64K (vs. the $59K of the 430). That $5K buys a lot of gas and if the 460 pulls down similar numbers I will more than likely be picking one up and selling my 430 privately next fall.

I just bought a flint mica/ash (gray) 430 and love it. The only other color combination I wanted was the matador red mica/cashmere. I've seen a few posts that say the quartz shadow something or other is supposedly a really nice color once you see it in person but of course what you see in the brochure or on the lexus web site does not do it justice.

I also think it could be slightly higher than the GS450h since the new GS460 will be the "flagship" model of the fleet. But we will have to wait and see from Lexus to figure out the pricing.
