I find that the 380HP engine will become more of a "bragging rights" than practical daily usage, if one is looking for a weekend driving on the mountain fun car, they wouldn't be looking at Lexus for that purpose anyway. IMHO of course, hope this doesn't offend anyone.

I drooled over the spec of the 98 GS400, especially the very un-Lexus-play-it-safe 300hp rating. When I found out the LS460 can generate 380hp, my first thought was "I'm gonna save money for the GS460!" Needless to say, I hope the recent "342" number that's been circulating around is not true.
These days, the Mercedes E550 has 382 hp. The BMW 550i has 360hp. These cars are not the "a to b" kind of cars. Hp isn't everything, but why detune something that can be clearly marketed as an advantage over the competition?
Remember the VDIM press coverage? Almost every article complained that it was too intrusive. The car didn't allow the driver to have fun. Lexus was forced to put the "off" switch in nearly all their vehicles now.
I think GS460 will get the same negative press treatment.

for vdim, maybe the newer one is better or improved. i remember the 3gs430 i drove definitely held the car back quite a bit. but when i drove the 600hl on laguna seca, the system allowed the car to slide and drifted quite a bit before trying to kick in to help me do anything. i was actually surprised about that. i hope that's used on the new lexus too
Pole Position
I'm definitely disappointed that the GS460 press release with only 342 hp, I'm hoping that Lexus will raise the bar and go will 400 hp, is it because there scared that a 400 hp GS460 might hurt the sales of the LS460 or what ?? I mean look at Mercedes Benz with the E550, CLK550, S550, CL550 all have an output of 382 hp, why detune the GS460 ??

The fact is, rarely has a mag said "well the GS should go faster" - the issues with the V8 GS have all had to do with the other weaknesses of the GS most importantly being about the way it drives and the cramped interior.
I for one am most disappointed that Lexus has chosen not to include a real sports package (again). Nothing wrong with 342hp, but in the V8 sports sedan category, you need to have this option IMHO.....
So I am looking on cars.com for used 06-07 GS430 and low and behold they have the GS460 listed. I guess they are already anticipating the model to show up soon. I figure if I get a newer GS, might as well save money due to not much difference in the performance. GS350 would be nice but I am a V8 type of guy. Besides they are rare, I see GS300-350 all day long, I can go a who month without seeing a 01-07 GS430. The wife think I should get a LS430 and SC400 for daily driving. It's tough deciding, but the GS460 really was on my list. LS460 is a little beyond what I am willing to pay per month.

I don't disagree with you. We all know the 4.6 V8 can generate 380hp - more with some tweaks. The thing is why Lexus is holding back?Originally Posted by doug_999

... and regarding the sports package ... don't get me started
Last year, I looked to purchase a new car and narrowed down the choices to the GS350 & BMW 335i sedan. I liked the GS350 luxury feel and quietness. I was saying to myself if only Lexus had provided a sport package (wider tires, slightly firmer suspension, a little lower, a little quicker throttle response), it would have made my decision much easier. When I look at my 335i now, I want to drive it. I look forward to driving it to/from work. The thing I don't miss in a BMW is quality and service - something Lexus excels at. A sport package is not really difficult technical hurdle to overcome. I guess it's just a product differentiation thing.

If Lexus was able to make an ES 330 SportDesign with AVS, special wheels etc, they can make a GS sport package IMO.
