Default Direct wiring

Has anyone trying bringing wiring from under the hood to inside the car? if so where and how did you come around or through the firewall. I need a direct line off the battery to inside the car. Thanks.

One idea would be to tap the battery at the fuse panel below the dash. How much current do you need?

that is what i would normally do but using the fuse panel for powering a transceiver will introduce alternator whine on on the signal. The radio only pulls 9.5Amps at max power.

Transceiver, like a ham radio? You could try connecting it to the fuse block to see if there's alternator whine. If so, you can run a temporary wire out to the battery to see if that helps reduce it. It might, but it might not--completely. If the battery fixes it, good. If not, you might use an in-line choke, and that may again open the option for tapping the power at the fuse. Good luck!

Yes, I installed a remote radar detector and there is a wire harness with a large rubber gromet from the fire wall to under the dash.

I simply put a bright light in the engine compartment and looked up behind the brake pedal. When I saw trickles of light, I pulled the gromet out and fished the wires through.

I thought it was going to be tough, but it turned out to be quite easy...

very nice i saw that gromet actually... but figured that it ouwld be a pain to move and hard to fin on the other side. Will take a better look when i get a day off. I installed half of the SR7 from Escort on my car ran the wires up the fender and through the door jam temporarily. Might be able to kill 2 bird with one stone here. thanks for the info.

Hey Pete,

I have the same setup except with the bel pro plus. Where did you mount your laser shift ers?

here's a photo of where I installed mine....

Then I put the radar reciever right behind the grill and the head unit right under the center stack above the ashtray.

Post Photos, I'd like to see how yours turned out.

Pretty good idea with the head unit in your line of site. I'm out of town now, but will post more photos of my complete install once I return.

Exclamation Where did you mount your VHF rig?

Hi Pete K1VDH:
Just wondering where you mounted your rig inside, antenna outside AND did you successfully take power from the battery without alt whine -- or from the fuse box?
I bought an RX 350 and would like to mount my Icom 2M FM radio in it. Any hints/photos appreciated!
P.S. there is a new Ham Radio thread started.

OK well I wound up going off the fuse panel in the trunk and running an extenion kit up to the front with the remote head. The Remote head is install where the ashtray belongs and the mic (currently still in the head) is goign to get wire out from under the console to make the radio hidden. Will post picture as soon as I get the chance on the other post. The Antenna is on a trunk lid mount.

ps: I just looked at the other thread and saw that it was started by N2OPJ, who is my father. Interesting.
