Matching Paint
Hey im just wondering if anyone else has ever had a problem matching the paint for a 01 Crystal White GS? cuz i cant seem to find a place that can get it rite the first time...like for my RMM grille, i had to get it painted 3 times to get it to look even close....and now after i got my TTE front lip painted, the color looks like the first 2 times of my RMM grille when the paint didnt match? the paint code is 062 rite? is there anything else i should kno??
for some reason crystal white is the hardest color to match paint to, I have seen a lot of GS with great fix up or aftermarket replacement, but somehow the color is really a bit off if you look closely.
When I had my bodykit painted and installed, I was told by the manager at the shop that they had to re-paint the entire kit because it didn't blend with the rest of the car.. The second time around it came out perfect. When I had my RMM grill it was painted 2 times also and still didn't blend with the car. I finally gave up on it and sold the grill. I believe 1 problem has to do with the prep work thats involved in painting different types of material. Fiberglass takes a different type of prep work compared to polyurethane. Its also up to the shops painter to take the time to "create" the perfect blend of paint for the job. My suggestion is to talk to the shop again and tell them to do a better job blending the paint with the rest of the car or just find another shop.
man...this kinda sucks...well its kinda a ***** for me to just leave the car their for them to match the paint cuz its my daily driver and i need a car etc. etc. i will go back and ***** and see wat i can get out of them, well thx for the info guys...ill let u kno how it goes.
Here's the deal with paint matching, there are paint codes, as you know, for a particular color. However, even from the factory, the exact same code can vary slightly in shade. When a body shop paints a piece, or a section of a car, they need to "play" with the shade to get it to match perfectly. If they just spray the coded paint, 9 times out of 10 its not going to match "perfectly". If you ever look at a body shops paint book, they will have 4 or 5 different splotches for the same color code at various shades. They take the shades and match up which one is closest to your particular factory spray. Bottom line is any good body shop can match the paint if they take the time to do so, but they will need your car there to make sure its right.
Good Luck.
Good Luck.

It's true that whites/pearl whites are the hardest colors to match. It is also true that a good body shop can get it to match up pretty well...good enough even that you can't really tell the difference but the match isn't going to be 100% perfect. I should know, my brother works at a high end body shop where they service Ferraris, Benzes, Bimmers, Lexos, Jags and what not. What my brother's shop does is get the paint to as near a match as possible. They go through a process which is called "blending". This is where they wet-sand the part(s) of the car that are adjacent to the parts or panels that are too be painted and then spray the part/panel and the sanded areas so that it matches.. I don't know if that makes sense but that's how blending goes. But most body shops don't do the blending thing because it's time consuming and is of course quite expensive.

High quality body shops will employ the blending method whenever they do any bodywork to a car. This is essential to get the paints to match. If you take it to a high end shop you are going to pay more $ but you WILL get what you pay for. When I get my kit I am going to a shop in tampa that does all the high end cars that have custom work and it is going to cost me some serious $ but it will be worth it. I have seen many of their cars and it is top notch. Everything fits perfectly and the paint is flawless. I know there has to be a few shops in Cali that can do this for you. Good luck and hope it turns out well for you.
