Hood Struts GS 400
I’ve viewed several videos showing how to replace hood struts on 1998-2004 GS 300/400. I have also viewed posts about hood strut replacement. I have a 2000 GS 400 and the videos bear no relation to reality.
The videos and comments indicate that you replace a smell tension strap on the **** and then just pull the strut off. Then just snap in the new strut.
FYI: On the GS 400, 200 model, there is no tension strap. You can try to pull off the strut from the **** but you will fail. Thestrut won’t come out. What you have to do is remove the **** that screws into the body (with the strut attached) and the **** that screws into the hood (with the strut attached) You need a 12 mm open end wrench. After you have removed the old strut with ***** attached, screw in new ***** on the body and hood and then snap in the new strut.
My replacements were Maxpow from Amazon.
Note: When attaching the new strut to the hood, you have to hold the hood to it’s highest height because the strut is extended at maximum length and you can’t push it to compress it.
Hope this helps.

I just used the 12mm wrench thats in the trunk. its not rocket science and i didn't fret over it when i realized there weren't any tension straps on the end. I think most people would realize this as well.
There's two kinds of struts... those that have the securing bolts attached to the strut (usually oem), and those that have the bolt separate from the strut, then you use the "tension strap" (usually aftermarket)... at least that's how the '98 GS is.
Just be aware, when buying units that use the tension-strap method, on eBay, they sell them with and/or without the tension-strap bolt. So if you're moving from oem to aftermarket (attached-bolt to separate-bolt), be sure to get the strut with the tension-strap bolt. Then when you replace it, you can get the strut without the tension-strap bolt.
Personally, we're the oem-type, so we go with the attached-bolt on oem-style strut.
