Default Hood Strut Failure

Was servicing front brakes on my friend's 2003 ES when I heard a loud boom. The hood strut had failed and the hood slammed shut. Good thing I wasn't leaning into the engine bay!

What amazes me is that this heavy hood has only one strut supporting it. Hard to believe. I looked for a stut on the passenger side and could not find it. Is it possible that this car has only one hood support strut? Thanks.

there are two... look closely you may see the hole made for the passenger side one. i would replace both if the drivers side one is weak too. very easy DIY but you need someone to make sure the hood is held up while you replace.

Don't think so. I have researched the parts and there is only one. I bought an aftermarket from Rockauto. Thanks for response. If you have a link that shows two hood supports please post it.

Yeah, even my 99 Avalon has two. Toyota/Lexus really cheaped out on 03 ES, at least on the hood support.
