Check Hard Disk
My first time on Club Lexus. I have a '98 GS400 and yesterday I pushed the dash button for my map. The map did not come up but instead the screen read: CHECK HARD DISK.
In the trunk on the right side is the Navigation black box approx 10" wide X 6" deep, 1.5" high. On the back is a model/serial number: TOYOTA 8641-50040. Manufacturer is Denso. I unplugged the box from 3 wire connections, unscrewed 4 screws, slid up a door panel where I assumed I'd see a CD disk. There is a space inside that is shaped like it would hold a cassette tape but the space was empty.
What am I looking at here? Is there in fact a CD somewhere else in the box or elsewhere in the car? I don't get it. Is it the whole box that needs to be replaced? I just want to get my GPS functions back on the screen in my dash. Thanks in advance for an explanation how I can solve this problem. Ron

I believe the 98-00 2GS uses a hard drive (might want to double check that). You can buy a replacement on eBay.

98 GS400 Navigation Unit
Thanks Kevin for the reply. I went to the local Lexus store and talked to a Parts guy who I believe was trustworthy. He told me the whole unit: TOYOTA 8641-50040 was bad and needed to be replaced. They wanted $1,600 for a remanufactured unit. No sale today. I'll go online and look around. Thanks again for your reply. Ron
