Default GS300 Shifter Issue

Hey all. I've got a 1998 GS300 and I'm having a shifter issue. When starting the car and trying to put it into drive I have to force it out of park. And when parking the car I have to force it to get past reverse, or neutral I guess. Both make the same hard plastic-like clicking sound when I force the shifter through.

What could be the issue, and is forcing the shifter like I am bad for it?

Shift interlock solenoid. Or the brake pedal position switch. Try pushing harder on the brake pedal. If that dont work, then the solenoid in the shifter is crapped out. Mine did exact same thing. I just disabled it. Not the safest thing but Im not buying a new shifter for just a stinkin solenoid....js.
