Default OEM LCD touchscreen head unit without Navigation???

What's up, looking for insight, can the oem pre 01 or 01+ touchscreen (navigation) head unit be used for climate control only? ..as in: if I do not have the navigation "brain' or other components.. will it plug & play (less nav of course) for climate control and any other misc. things it does, less the nav?? Thanks in advance.

No, you can't use it without the rest of the system. The navigation screen is just an interface for the computer in the trunk. There is actually no electrical connection between the screen, radio, and climate control modules on the actual head unit, as it is all linked by the computer.

Thanks a lot IToaster, appreciate it. Would you be able to advise which (I can always look through some of the nav retrofit threads for part #'s) components I'd need, you mentioned the one in the trunk, but I could forgo the actual nav brain, or that IS the nav brain in the trunk...? harnesses?

In short, I like the look of the oem headunit, and would want to put it there for cosmetics, but then I was going to replace the radio portion with a single din flip out (nav/lcd/ec)... BUT not if I have to purchase $1k of oem stuff...that I almost will not use at all.... dilemmas...

Sorry, but it won't work without everything.

I am not too sure yet how hard it is to pull the nav harness (or if is part of other harnesses) but I bet you could buy the setup for less than $500.

I know I'll be selling mine soon.

You're better off sticking with the standard climate control. A functional swap requires replacing the complete dashboard and floor wiring harnesses. The unit in the trunk is the navigation computer, which controls all functions of the navigation screen.

Are you SURE?

Since those with factory NAV can "downgrade" simply by plugging in a climate control unit - it may stand to reason that if you do not have nag, you can plug in a display and use it as a climate control only...

Not that likely - but plausible...

Without a doubt. I have a navigation head unit for a complete retrofit that I was planning, and the black box for the climate control has no direct connection to the screen. The navigation ECU communicates with it electronically to tell it what to do.

Not the path of least resistance I was hoping for, but thank you again for sharing your experience, I'm sure it will help others too who come across this thread.
