Default charcoal canister issue

I have a 03 lexus gs300 and my charcoal canister went bad as a result of me topping out my gas once...smh...I went and purchased a 05 canister a used one in working condition. I put it in rode it a little while to only have the check engine light come on again.the code im getting are the ones for the canister. I did some research and found out that the check engine could be becuase there are 4 different part numbers for the canisters from 01-05.I heard if they where not compatible then the check engine light would come on maybe as a result from the sensor.I was wondering if I could take the sensor off my 03 canister which I tested and it's good and put it on the one I just purchased or will I have to get a canister with the same part number.

One over fill of the tank shouldn't have ruined the canister. Given time to dry out and it should have been ok. The issue may not have been the canister at all. It could be the switch on the canister. Or, it could be a loose hose; or loose fitting gas cap. That was an awfully expensive solution given that the error codes can be misleading (I assume you got a P044x code). Just as an fyi, you usually want to start fixing these problems cheapest to expensive solution first. I think most on this forum would have advised to start with letting the canister dry out first, then checking for loose hoses next, then replacing the gas cap, then replacing the switch on the canister, then lastly, replacing the canister. Anyway... good luck.

Prob p0446. I'd start at the gas cap, checking hoses, then the more difficult things like the sensor and what.not. Not tightening the gas cap enough itself can trip that code

it wasnt just the vsv valve?

also i dont think the over filling of the gas tank does anything really. i did that for years while i knew the vsv was going out. changed the vsv about a month ago and zero problems

changing that vsv valve is stupid easy. people on this board really make that thing sound like the worst thing ever.

I apologize I thought I posted the code it was p0442 when I changed the canister out the codes changed.it use to be p0441 and 46. I really think the canister played a part becuase it was much heavier than the new one and had a strong gas smell. Im gonna check the hoses this am and reset the code. if itndoes work i knownthe sensor on my old one is good so I might change all that stuff out.I gotta figure out because my car has to be inspected its past due.

does anyone have input on the part number issues. the one I got was from a 05 with a different part number from my original. Does anyone know what the differences are on these canisters with different part numbers? I know the 01 to 05 are very similar.
