Unhappy Removing harmonic balancer bolt

Hello all, I recently completed a 2jZgte swap into a 98 gs300. https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sho...18#post7783118The problem that I and the shop have run into is that the bolt for the harmonic balancer will not come loose to change the timing belt and water pump. I have broken 3 1" breaker bars attempting it in my garage.

I placed into the shop, and they used a 2" air tool used for removing 18 wheeler rims and could not get it. They attempted to use an air chisel on the bolt and no success. They also put the car on a lift, and had three guys pull on the breaker bar and cheater bar and bent both. Anyone have any suggestions?

Check out the DIYs for changing timing belts. How long is your breaker bar?

People end up using in the range of 6'-10' (foot) pole or longer!, and getting some 200 lb people to acheive the torque necessary to break it off.
The pole may help give some structural strength to the tool you use as well (which better be a solid hunk of high quality metal wrench, and not have any moving parts).

The shop I used to do my timing belt job ran into similar problems, and eventually had to use long pole too (I chatted them up when getting my car back).

Thanks for the reply. I imagine that theywere using a pretty longcheaterbar, as well as the highest air pressure that they could. The shop owner told me that they didn't want to break the.bolt off, so they stopped.

I changed the belt and pump on my GE with no problems, but I broke several breaker bars trying to change the GTE before I sent it to the shop. Two of them were craftsman.

Same bolt/pulley on the GTE's as the GE's? This did the trick on my GE after snapping one of my breaker bars. Didn't wanna mess with the starter trick either.

That's the tool I have. No more broken tools.

I use a chain wrench to hold the pulley and a good quality 1/2 ratchet/breaker bar with possibly a pipe at the end of it for extra leverage. Some of them are stubborn but applying a little penetrating lube can also help. Good luck

This is what I use: http://www.matcotools.com/catalog/pr...-HOLDING-TOOL/

Use that with a 2' breaker bar stopping against the frame rail and get the longest most ridiculous breaker bar you can on the bolt, enough force should break it. You may need a sumo wrestler.

What he said. Used the tool he said and a 3/4" ratched with socket on the bolt and a half inch drive on the tool. 2 of us broke the nut a loose. Also hosed the nut down with PB Blaster.

Thanks for all of the input guys. I tried it on the pallet, didn't work, broke breaker bar #1. Tried it on the engine hoist, Bent breaker bar #2. got the engine in the car, broke breaker bar #2. Also, have the Toyota tool that I used for my GE engine, bent the bolts for it, didn't want to risk breaking them off in the harmonic balancer. Decided that this was out of my skill set, took it to the shop. They couldn't do it.......Im going to try Toyota of Austin and see if they can get it. Im frustrated.
