Rattled & Roll
Is anyone experiencing a rattle somewhere behind the dash in a 2001 GS430.
Since I had the car at the dealer (who said they couldn't “reproduce” the rattle) for its 1500 mile checkup the rattle has gotten worse.
Further I have had difficulty finding a free flow air filter for the 430.
Any suggestions?

if you're talking about a subtle rattle that is sensitive to rough road conditions, and eminating from near the driver side front vent, then yes.
search this forum for "rattle" and you should see the prior discussion on this.

This rattle happens continuously. It doen't matter if I'm on a smooth or rough road or if I'm going 20mph or 80mph.
I'm not feeling any unusual vibrations in the steering wheel or in the car itself, but it's definitely enough of a vibration to cause the rattle.

Maybe it's your glovebox. They have Techical Service Bulletins out at Lexus to address a known rattle there, a crackle in the moonroof frame, and other things. If you search the forum for "TSB", "GloveBox"...that could help you talk to your dealer for a fix.
Try to bring a passenger along to help you isolate the location of the sound (so you can drive and watch the road). Then take a Lexus tech with you for a test drive and point it out. That worked for me to eliminate the rattles I've found.
These cars isolate sounds way too well. Every little thing can be noticeable. Funny, huh.

Hey GS430,
If you want to keep your stock housing I can get you a reusable Tom's air filter from Japan.
Email or all me at 1-800-908-6968 ext 2381 if you interested.

My 2000 GS3 had a rattle coming for the front driver side. Every time I took it to the dealership they couldn't reproduce it because the sound was too low. While I was driving around I found out that it was coming for the driver side A-piller. While driving, I would hear the rattle so I would push up on the A-piller and the rattle would stop. I pointed this out the dealership and they stuffed the A-piller with something and it stopped the rattle.

It was coming from the driver side a-pillar along the windshield. You can check to see if the a-pillar is loose by pushing against the cloth cover. If it feels like something is moving in or makes some noise you know it's loose. compare the feel against the passanger side a-pillar.
