ProjectGS: Quick Makeover Before TX2K12
So, the car has been unchanged exterior wise for almost 2 years now. The TX2k12 Supra/very fast cars event is coming up soon. Decided to do some quick mods to the car before the event comes around.
Update March 3, 2012
Took one of my spare bumpers to mold in the TTE replica lip. I know, Brian will not approve lol. Needed one now, real one was no longer available, and this was cheap. Plus, I was curious about the fitment...it actually isn't too bad. Must sand off all the old paint first. Very tedious process!
Must clean the plastic up to where there is absolutely no paint where I am going to be joining the two pieces.
Lip has been welded on. The plastic is actually welded together, not glued like most people do. This is done with a special plastic welding system I have. Uses high heat, but precisely temperature controlled for the specific plastic. Then you meld it all together with a plastic welding rod. The two joined materials are just as strong as the parent material. I tried the drop test and the lip did not budge. FYI: Drop test means throw it about 4-5 feet away from me and let it land on the floor lol!
Close up view of the welding joints.
Another close up view of the welding joints.
Started the super tedious process of molding the lip into the car. Test fitting in this picture.
Different angle. Remember, this is before any sanding has taken place. Just laid it on thicker than needed so I have some leeway to sand down to conform the shape. Any of you body guys here...let me know if that was the wrong thing to do. I just do this on the side for fun lol.
Some fun toys also came in the mail today!
All unwrapped and pretty looking.
Old OEM stock tail lights on the car.
New aftermarket LED tail lights installed!
After many many hours of extremely tiresome work...I finally finished sanding and shaping the molded in lip.
Close up. This bumper had a ton of cracked paint so I had to sand much of it down to the bare plastic.
Le ghetto paint booth area of deployment
Friend helping me set it up.
Finished with a custom air filtration system
Here's the inside. Haven't setup the lights yet. This custom ghetto paint booth took about 1 hr to build.
Bumper inside the paint booth.
Good lighting installed before painting. Here's the final result for today. Calling it quits for now. Been working for about 15 hours straight!!!!!!!
Super late...or early (haven't slept now and it's 6AM!). Used the last of my energy to post this update. I'll be back with more tomorrow. Q45 retrofit in the works as well.
