Generally speaking, I think factory parts are more reliable than aftermarket parts.

No offense...but it's funny how some really still believe that turbos have or imply reliability issues and turbo lag. A poorly done turbo kit will probably give that, but hell so will any poorly done product.

But yes, factory parts over more reliabity..its because they are a compromise with it leaning more towards mass market and long term durability than maximum performance. Quality aftermarket performance items still offer reliability, but have a focus on performance.

Look at the factory Toyota 2JZGTE / 1UZFE and the Nissan SR20DET / RB26DET, phenomenal testiments to quality.. but hell.. the NA E46 motors are great..yet they are having reliability issues too...go figure...

I think HKS JZS161 summed my remaining sentiments perfectly.

D/R: Bang for the buck? Stock? No. Depends on what you want. Turbo? Not unless you want to invest mucho $$.

"the mods would all be the same as far as..." See, you can't make that comparison when looking at dollars. Now, HP? Sure! What is the ceiling on that I6? Something crazy like 1KHP?

Dollar for dollar, I'd always choose the V8.

Guys have we forgotten about the SC for our 400's... and if you can dig a little deeper into the cash pot there is always the twin turbo set up ... the 400 naturally aspirated is still a force to be reconded with and when boosted only a chosen few will come close to beating us.

I think the point UTGS400 was trying to make is that a vehicle set up for performance from the factory, ie; M5 or SupraTT, is one thing, but when you go tearing into a vehicle with thousands of hours of R&D into it's current design, and add a turbo or SC, it's going to be less reliable then it was 9 time out of 10.
Ok, so now you only get 150K miles out of your modded motor/tranny when before you would get 200K out of your stock one... acceptable losses if you ask me

I think doing the head clip swap on GS shouldn't be too bad. Afterall, they use 2JZ-GTE in Japan for V300. Just swap in/out everything in a experienced/trusted shop. The total should be around 10k or less.

ray is expecting this

2JZ-GTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

turbo lag is way over rated, a turbo GS3 will be faster than a GS4 at all rpm

Yeah, but will a turbo GS3 be faster than a twin turbo GS430?

Default Gs400 owner

I went into the market for the gs line about 8 months ago. i searched for value and car quality. i eventually purchased a 99 gs400. the main reason i did was because of reliability. i went to lexus of nicholasville and asked several questions and the one that pushed me to the 4. They told me out of the 4-5 years the gs has been out they have had to break down or redo only 1 gs 400, and that says alot. I asked about a 300 and they said they have had major work done on over 75 of them. i wondered to myself about modifications and i know not many people fix there lexus up, especially around southeastern Kentucky. but both are full of potentional...but the 4 is my pick

hahaha, dex, some people have this misconception that below 3000rpm the car is a snail.. 50rwhp.. then just explodse to 500rwhp...

just clairifying

infact.. around 3000rpm the GS4 prob doesn't make much more than 150~ rwhp... a high power 2JZ-GTE would be making about 280rwhp at that point already. and thats with a single T78.. just go over to supra forums and you'll see what im talking about...

manaray.. ok i dunno if we should get into that. But on an UNBUILT motor, i think the 2JZ would handle more.. but the trans would let go before anything else, considering the GS3 and GS4 trans are almost identical, they would both hold the same power.

The 2JZ-GTE is a beast. It all depends on the modifications done to it, as most of us know, this is where this beautifully built engine shines.

A stock 2JZ-GTE can easily handle 500+ horsepower. If we're talking Supra (and we are not, but listen anyway) you can even use the stock transmission with this kind of power. There are turbo kits available to achieve about 1200 hp!! Expensive kits

the stock supra tranny is just insane. The titan supra, which runs 9.00second passes, is running the stock 6spd transmission, only mod is a new clutch. Now that is toyota quality... i wish they overbuilt their cars like this all the time *sigh*
