Default Car holds forth Gear?

Hey guys. My car has been doing this for a little while now. Basically even after it is warmed up it will hold forth gear longer than it should before it shifts into fifth. Normally it shifts around 2k RPM's but it will hold forth gear to the point where i can gas it up to 4k RPM's then let it come back down, do it again and it still holds the gear then it finally shifts. Anybody have any idea what it could be? The transmission fluid is pretty much new. I changed it when i did my 90k Service.

Please don't say Soleniod Shifter.... I can't deal with all the things going wrong with my car.

I guess these transmissions arent as bulletproof as people say... If it was the solenoid it would throw a code...

Tried resetting your transmission computer? It might need to relearn your driving habits. Doubtful its a solenoid issue.

thats a bummer man, what fluid did you put in at 90k was it toyota IV atf or something else how many miles do you have currently. If its been doing it for awhile did it start after the 90k service fluid change or before.

Toyota Type T-IV at about 95k miles. It's only been doing it for probably the last 4 or 5 months or so. I don't remember exactly when it started, just very frustrating having these small problems. They're starting to add up!

I do suppose you checked the fluid level right? I havent researched any conditioners like lucas oil's and what not. Probably not a solenoid problem but could be a valve body hydraulic flow issue. Lets hope not I will ask my uncle if he can give insight on this and will post for you tomorrow.

Thank you, I appreciate it!! There is a small leak from the tranny bolt seaping from me overtorquing it. But the Hot Level is perfect. I'm getting it rethreaded tommorow at my mechanic so lets see if that fixes it.

Fluid level is the first thing I would check. Low fluid will cause exactly what you're describing.

The proper procedure to check the fluid is when the the fluid is warm - so drive it for at least 20-30 minutes. Then check it while the car is running.

Definitely the fluid level. I've been having to refill my fluid every other week because someone cut my tranny line, so I have some current experience . Thats one of the symptoms I have when it begins to get low.

here's the thing with our GS's...as i was talkin to a couple Lex specialist from Japan..our tranny are supposed to be bullet proof so much that they said if u never flush ur tranny fluid it will run up to around 400k miles...they also said that if the dealer never flush the tranny @ 50k then don't touch it at all bec it causes problems...im at 140k and im not touching mine...and i still run up to 140mph shifting smooth no bumps or nothing

I have and ALWAYS had the same damn problem with my car...well EVER SINCE I got my 3000 stall torque converter installed with the Supra LSD rear. Still to this day it does this where at around 3000-3500rpms (the stall speed of the TC; perhaps the lock-up) it finally shifts into the next gear. Sometimes it doesn't shift until 4000rpms or so...or I can force the shift by letting off the gas a little, it shifts and then get back on it. ***Be advised, this ONLY occurs when I am driving the car like a panzy! lol When I get on it (WOT), she still shifts nice and proper at redline in every gear.

My fluid levels are good and I only use the BEST...Amsoil ATF (meets and exceeds Toyota Type IV ratings) and keeps tranny fluid temps the coolest. Also, as a side note the NUMBER ONE cause of tranny failure is friction/heat. Lower fluid temps "help" prolong the life of the tranny. I have a tranny cooler as well. I know that you have all these Items as well though...good luck, but I think this is rather normal due to your mods.

Try disconnecting the battery for 5-10 mins. The transmission "learns" how you drive and bases its shift points off that, so if you disconnect the battery it will reset everything and force it to "learn" again. You will lose radio presets, but it's one way to possibly solve the problem.

yea on ANY tranny with high miles you're not suppose to flush it. but you can change the filter and ~3 quarts you get when you drain it. Flushing will loosen gunk thats in there that can harm the tranny, but a simple drain and fill is fine. Yea I've got 210k on mine and it runs fine and I've practically drained the whole tranny (probably fluid in converter and all) since its been leaking for so long, shes actually running much better.

If you do a little search, you'll fine many who have drained and filled and have been given better performance.
