Default Key question...NOT a lost key thread.

I have a master key for my wife's 99 GS400....it's the kind that does not have the L logo on the back. I think it's like an ebay key or something.

We want to get another key and just swap the innards so we can have a factory key with the logo, and also make a spare.

First question is, did 98-00 GS400's not come with an L on the key?

Second is, can I buy an OEM uncut key from ebay, transfer internals, and then use that one to make a copy?

Thanks!

All factory Lexus keys have the L logo most Lexus dealers charge around $69.00 for a replacement shell and shank "key minus electronics" and most dealers can cut the key for you and if the electronic part of your key works to unlock and start the car you wont need to get it programed

5t341th, what do you mean by use the original to make the cut? Do you mean to have someone cut another blade using the existing one?

GS4GEEZER, so if I just purchase the shell and insert my existing electronics, I just need to get the blade cut, right?

And then, since I have a full working key, I can buy another one with the electronics, get the blade cut, and use my existing key to help program the second?

yes, as long as you have 1 master key, they can do it.
dealers do cut keys for free if u buy the blank from them. sometimes you can just bring one in and they cut it for you.
you just need the registration to prove its yours

hey, you can just buy the blank on ebay, take it to the dealership and they will cut it for you for like $15 bucks. then just unscrew the back of your key to take out the chip/buttons and transfer it to the new key. i did this a couple months ago

OK, so I assume the chip is in the electronic schematics not the keyhead...I don't suppose the blade is transferable as well?
