Default Guys, need help !!!

I got a 02 gs430 and drove to work today and my AUDIO system isn't working (radio, tape or CD). Looks like i'm getting signal for the AM/FM radio (i see ST on the display), but i can't hear anything. SO i tried to play CD and still cant hear anything. Before i go to the dealer (which i'd rather not), any ideas on what i need to check for?

thanks all for the help.

I guess by now you have switcd off your car and pulled the keys out.

Try turning the car on and there is a more than 50% chance that every thing has cleared out. Almost like re-start on the computer.

If the problem persists then, there is an actual problem.

You didn't say if you had a non-ML system or not. If it's a ML system more than likely it maybe your ML amp. If so, the dealer will charge in the excess of $900.00 for a replacement. I have had several friends with GS w/ML and they had the same problem. We purchased amps off ebay and installed them ourselves and problem solved. They had the same symptoms as you are having. If you have a non-ML system I can't help you. Good Luck.

sorry guys, yup i do have the Levinson system.

few questions:
1. what exactly do i look for in ebay (ML Amp)? is there a specific ML Amp i need to get?
2. how can i make sure that the AMP is my problem? any checks i can do myself?
3. is there a site on how to replace the Amp myself?

thanks again fellas.

If you have the ML system w/Navigation, the amp in in the trunk on the right side underneath the Navigation Computer. It takes 10-15 minutes to remove and re install. Can't find the the stock number but check here on:
http://www.trademotion.com/partlocat...?siteid=213808

Or check the radio section here on for more info. Again very easy to replace.

IF it's your amp, why not replace it with an aftermarket one that would perform better and cost less? All you would need is a line in converter and tap into some wires (which is already conveniently ran to your trunk).

Default Has anyone done that?!

Gapxguy described exactly what i want to do. Has anyone done that - i.e., replaced the ML AMP and whatever else needs to be replaced as an alternative to buying a really high dollar replacement amp? Thx!

If only it were that easy. The ML system is CAN bus, meaning the amp is not just an amp - it's a DSP, too. You cannot just "tap into some wires" and make it work - there is nothing to interpret the signal and send it to those wires if the DSP is not there. No one makes an aftermarket unit that takes the CAN bus and does the job, which kind of sucks but that's the breaks. To upgrade, you either A) replace the whole system with aftermarket (including deck) or B) replace the amp and tap into the wires coming out of it to the speakers, use a summing unit like the Audio Control LC6/8, and run aftermarket after that.
