This tough to diagnois online. What you're calling a rattling some may interpet as pinging. It could be just that, a rattle in the dash or under the hood. If you can't find it on your own, perhaps a visit to a mechanic is in order. If it is pinging, perhaps trying a different brand of premium gas will cure the noise.
does knocking permanently damage the engine?
and i thought just about all modern cars have some sort of detonation monitors to adjust timing to compensate for poor octane fuel?
i feel gyped by Shell
i really want to get the gas tested and see if it really is 91 octane
the pump that i fuel up at even has its own hose and nozzle for the premium gas
you're right. Our ECU will comphensate for pinging so I doubt it's an issue for now. Does this happen when you're actually driving, or can your replicate the noise by being parked while stepping on the pedal?
sounds to me u may have some heat sheild loose under the car the reason i say is because i had slight pinping when i would accelerate for about 1yr it started out mild then it got to the point that it was a little louder to where i wouldn't let the ladies in the car blah blah blah but put ur car on a lift and shake ur exhaust pipe or see if u can move ur heat sheilds if 1 of them is loose then it could be a good chance that is ur prob.
or if u changed ur mufflers and the bolts wasnt tight it can cause a slight rattle it happened to me when i went from borla to l-tuned.
This last post about a heat sheild is a good one to check in to. I've read about this several times here on the forum, sorry it didn't come to mind in my earlier post. Yes, modern cars can compensate to a point for low grade gas, but under a load even GS's can ping/knock a little with bad gas.
i havent been really able to replicate the sound by putting it in park and hitting the throttle
but that being said, this issue sort of comes and goes so i cant even always replicate it on the road either
muffler and such are still stock on this car but when i get some free time in a couple of weeks, ill bring my car to my mechanic and have him take a look at the heatshield on a lift
thanks a lot for the advices for now, ill try to give you guys an update to see what is up later on
i'll give u the simptomes of what i experienced @ times i would go to a stop light, or sign and would go and step on the gas pedal i would here what kind of sounds like a pinging/ slash rattle sound, i knew it wasnt the gas because ive always used hi octane fuel, so what i did i had my step son put the car in park had him step on the brake and tap on the gas while i opened my ears up and thats when i found that the heat sheild was loose i took it off @ my friend shop along with others that was loose.
