Default I have an 01 430 and I bought the updated DVD...

in January and it was a GREAT update. The old DVD couldn't find my house in a large suburb of Boston - sucky. The new one is much better at finding new roads and businesses. Still not as good as the Garmin database, but the best that Lexus has to offer.

Where'd you get the disk and (if you don't mind me asking) what are they running?

I just got an updated disk (a 2004; I have an '02 GS 430), and attempted to install it myself. I got a message saying that the disk was incompatible, even though it appears to be identical to the old one. Does the disk need to be installed by Lexus, and if not, what am I doing wrong? I'd prefer to not have to pay Lexus to do it.

The disk should have had a sticker on the package mentioning the years and models supported. The current one is 5.1, and it works in RX330s, GS430s, and almost all the other models. It is better, but while the streets and POIs have increased, the routing now seems like the "maximize freeway" button is stuck on, even for the minimize distance choice.

Most likely you have a gen 2 navigation. Look for a CD number xxxxx-xxx2x that has that 2 on the 2nd to last number. My buddy tried the 5.1 update on his '01 GS and it didn't work on his, but it did on mine ('02 gen 3 navi). So def make sure it's compatible with the 2nd gen navi. Check with your dealer if you're not sure.

Ok, so how can you tell what gen navigation you have?

Do all 02s have Gen 3, and therefore should I be looking for a disk with a a DVD number xxxxx-xxx3x? Sorry for what I am sure is an rudimentary question.

I've got an '02 GS. Here's what I learned in my successful (and I stress successful) updating adventure:
