I could be wrong but I think my instrument panel's backlighting is determined by a culmination of what the light sensors in the car perceive as far as ambient lighting goes, and where I have the little rotary **** to the left of my instrument cluster set to.

I don't think it really matters if my lights are on or off.

That's my belief as well. During the daytime, the rotary switch won't do much to the brightness of the instrument gauges, as the light sensors are detecting "daytime" and it pretty much puts it at full brightness for full visibility (say 5/5) (of course, if you drive in a dark tunnel, it will switch to a lower brightness setting so it doesn't overwhelm you with too much brightness). The gauges need backlighting whether the car has it's headlights on or off, else they'll remain black and cna't be read!

During the night time, the gauges will automatically dim to a lower level upon car startup (say 3/5), and will adjust accordingly--if you want it lower, you'll have to dim it using the rotary ****. If it's really dark outside, your car will start up in maybe 2/5 brightness.

can anyone with a service manual check if the sensors have a fuse? or
or the possible culprit on this?
