My mechanic says that my differential is going out. Anyone know what my replacement options are? Any upgrades I can do at this time? Supra LSD? Thanks.
Is it making a whining noise when cruising especially when you let off the gas?
I want to say ron millen motorsports?? I've seen them online for the 1st gen gs, but wasn't paying much attention. Run a search in the sc300 forums, odds are if they have LSD for the 1st gen SC then they have one for the GS. I think that's how I came across the ones I found. I'd do some digging for you but I'm going home and I'll be away from the CPU this weekend.
Might was well do the upgrade, I'd say. Of course I haven't seen the prices yet. How much for a stock differential?
Sorry to hear about your car. That sucks. Sold my '72 cutlass for that reason (the last straw).
At low speeds (under 5mph) sounds like rocks or marbles ratting around. At higher speeds you don't hear anything except the occasional clunck (like loose suspension parts banging on each other) when hitting a bump of some sort.
The TRD part # for their LSD is the same for all ARISTOs and the Supra so I imagine other Supra applications will work. I saw some posts about the Supra TT LSD changing the final drive ratio and possibly affecting the accuracy of the speedo.
TRD's list. Ignore the bit about the "side gear shaft," that's only required for Japan-spec models.
If I were you I'd try to get the TRD one but I would also run some more searches and get some questions answered by some people who have done the upgrade.
Thanks pianoman, I'm gonna get a second opinion from another mechanic. If it is in fact the differential, I probabaly will spend the few extra bux and get the TRD LSD. Thanks again.
If you need to replace the whole differential, think about changing the gears too. You can get a lower gear (higher number, e.g. 3.75 v. 4.10), which would really help standing-start acceleration, but it would reduce your overall mpg because your engine would be cruising at a higher rpm in 4th gear.
