Default Engine starting problem

Sometimes my car won't start when I turn the key in the ignition. It just clicks evertime I turn the key. After a few tries it starts up right away.

It is not a battery problem because the battery is new. One time after starting the car, the starter kept turning, even when I took the key out of the ignition.

The starting problem occurs mostly when it is cold (50-60 degrees), but it starts right away in the morning when it is warm.

To me, it seems like the starter module might be bad.

Any suggestions?

Default starter

Hi. Your symptoms sound exactly whan mine were like earlier this summer. I believe that your starter may have done its job and may need to be replaced. You can get them at Pep Boys for about $170 or the dealer for about $290. My bro and my dad did the labor on mine. They tested the starter relay before I bought the new starter and it tested fine.

is the starter relay attached to the starter or somewhere else? Is the starter relay easy to replace?

Does anyone know where the starter relay is located?

Is it easy to replace?

I heard the part can be bought from Pep-boys, is that true?

I just bought a new relay for $8.00, but it didn't cure the problem. Maybe it is the starter or the ignition switch.

I do not have time to fix it now because I have finals coming up soon, but when I solve the problem I will let you guys know so it will be available in case the same problem happens to someone else.

Try cleaning your battery terminals. If that doesn't help, replace your starter.

Loud engine noise continue after key was pulled

Desperately need help!!

Yesterday, I drove my 99 RX300AWD (odo=110K miles) for 20 Miles with A/C off.

Then, I parked the car for 2 hours.

When I started the engine, there was a loud noise along with engine noise (sort of crane noise)

Then, I shut the ignition off & pulled the key, engine shut off.
However, that strange noise continue for approx 30 second (enough time for me to open the hood and trunk trying to get a wrench)

Then, the noise completely gone by itself.

I started the engine again & no more noise. I tried several times, and couldn't repeat the problem.

Later, I drove the car for 100 miles, with a/c on & off. Nothing unusual.

Trans oil&Engine oil level is fine.

Could it be the starter keep engaging to the flywheel, or starter relay? If yes, why the noise continued for 30 sec after the key was pulled?

Appreciate any suggestion.

That could be the problem. Something in your starting system is telling the starter to keep turning. This could be caused by the relay, ignition switch, or starter. You could try ruling out the relay by getting a new relay, they're pretty cheap and might be the cause of your problem. In my previous post, I changed the relay but it didn't cure the problem, but it might cure your problem. I ended up getting a new starter after an auto-electric shop performed a diagnosis.
