Toyota has announced that most 2020 model-year vehicles will feature two new innovative technologies: Automatic Engine Shut Off and Automatic Park. The addition of these features to its 2020 lineup demonstrate Toyota’s commitment to having one of the freshest and most intelligent lineups in the business.

Automatic Engine Shut Off

Automatic Engine Shut Off works with the Smart Key System, automatically turning off the engine if the vehicle is left idling for too long. This helps reduce emissions and improves overall fuel economy. The new iteration includes improved audio and visual warnings. Toyota plans to expand Auto Shut Off so that you’ll receive a reminder about automatic engine shut off via the Toyota smartphone app.

There are times when you need your car to keep idling for over 30 minutes (for example, when you're stuck in a snowbank and depending on your car's heat to keep you alive). I wonder if this can be disabled in the smartphone app or Carista.

Can't you just restart it?

This actually seems like a great safety feature.

Did not know about this. I was concerned that the car had a problem. Best, T

Idling is bad and unnecessary.

also:

especially in the mornings when people think they're "caring" for their car by letting it idle or "lettin' her warm up!" in the morning before going... one of the worst things you can do. wrote long articles/posts about this back in the day and blew peoples hair back.

the *best* and healthiest thing you can do for your car in the mornings on cold start is drop it in drive and take off immediately. (gently like a gentleman of course) at most 5 seconds*

but people are idling like 10-15 min lol

hell, the hybrid doesn't idle at all. as you drive down the road, in the morning under battery power, engine jerks on immediately and instantly gets to work under load.

I thihk a lot of the "let it idle" folk wisdom died with the arrival of synthetic oil. Used to be that a car got a disproportionate share of engine wear in the opening 60 seconds after a cold winter start, as the molasses-like oil was unable to flow immediately through the engine and pass through small-diameter journals. Biut synthetic behaves largely the same no matter what the temperature, so nothing's lost by subjecting the engine to load the moment you start it.
