Default Braking pad replacement labor cost

I want to change the braking pads (Rear and front) for my 2013 ES 350. It seems too expensive for me when I got an estimation of $600 from local Lexus dealer and $540 from a local TOYOTA dealer. What do you think guys? Has any one done that in local shop that cost less. Is it normal thing to do in any car shop that will not affect the warranty?

Considering the ease of replacement, those are definitely too high for only pad replacement. Cost should be roughly half of what they're asking. I've always found brake service to be far too high for what it is. It's not a complicated procedure on most cars, it's just slightly more involved in that it requires wheel and caliper removal.

Maybe they are turning the discs, too?

If you're getting it done at a Toyota or Lexus dealership and they are competent, I can almost guarantee you that they are turning the rotors. Which would add to the cost. One thing to keep in mind, OEM brakes pads use shims. Many aftermarket brake pads don't. So if you take it somewhere else and they use aftermarket pads, they usually throw away the shims. This can cause noise. And then you find out a shim kit costs as much as brake pads, they're not cheap. If you want to save money, I would suggest a GOOD independent shop and use OEM pads. Just my 2 cents.

Most shops charge 15-30 per disc to have them resurfaced, which would still make those quotes a bit out of the ballpark.

Unless i'm missing something that's vehicle specific, it should be a total of sixteen bolts, one to one and a half hours, and a few beers to have all four pads changed.

Edit, just checked and the rears are in fact removed and compressed the same as the fronts. If you have a basic ratchet set and a c-clamp you should be able to do all four corner brake pads for under 200.00 depending on the quality of pad you go with and should not affect your warranty in any way.

Hmmm, I thought that places really didn't "turn" disks anymore but just replaced them. Brake disks are thin to begin with so turning them just makes them thinner and more likely warp.

Shops don't want customers coming back in a few weeks because their brakes now "pulse" when stopping.

Oh, it cost me ~$1200 to have my local shop replace pads and rotors on my Jaguar S-Type...

He always insists on using OEM parts since he knows, before hand, that they will fit correctly.

But I figure I save $200-$300 by not having them done at a Jaguar dealer

I recently got a quote from my lexus dealer to do the front pads only and it was about $75.
Thats for a 2014 ES with less than 25k.

Clearly I am going to the wrong places. A Toyota dealer in Canada would never do pad replacement work for that amount and a Lexus dealer would be worse.

Correction, most cars do not have shims on their pads. The older cars did.

Front brakes are $155 for pads and $230 for rotors, comes in pairs. Rear rotors are $272 for the pair and rear pads are $57 for a pair. That's a grand total of around $715 in OEM parts (prices sourced from Jaguarparts.com). I guess I need to start a Jaguar maintenance shop if I can get away with charging $500 in labor on a simple brake pad and rotor change. Unless you're also getting a rental, you're getting overcharged by several hundred dollars.

Thanks, but my local mechanic had the parts delivered from the local Jaguar dealer and that was what the dealer charged him. Labor was only a couple hundred if that...

Actually that is the reason I went to the Lexus dealer this time for service. My car has been making that squeaky noise when I hit the brakes, I found on google that it might be the shims causing the noise.

I usually take the car to a local shop near me ( closer and cheaper I thought). They check the pads and say they were still good, but still I had them replaced the front pads. I am still hearing the noise with the new pads on, a little google search says that is might be shims causing the noise. Now, I have to go back to lexus to get new OEM pads ( the dealer wont work on the car unless its all OEM parts) and check whats causing the stupid noise.

are your brakes squeeking? what's your mileage at? how thick are your pads? they usually wear down to 1-2mm. if you are mechanically inclined, you can do it yourself. it is relatively easy. my local machine shop (not auto shop) trues rotors for $10 a rotor. pep boys does it for $15. pads are $30-60 for a set.
