My daughter just called informing me that she cannot find the key to her 2016 ES. The car is in a store parking lot. She locked it by touching the door handle. Can the 2016 ES be locked by touching the handle if the keyfob is inside the car?
She is looking inside the store but wanted to rule out this possibility. Thank you!
The key was "on her" somewhere when she did that. She clearly dropped it after walking away.

I'm curious here, How does car know if my key is outside or inside the car LOL
And yes every time if I touch the door handle and my key is inside, the car will BEEPING

There are multiple proximity sensors on the vehicle, and yes, it knows whether the key is inside, or outside, and if out of range (2-3 feet) on the outside, it won’t be detected. But you can unlock/lock the vehicle from further away, but that’s not using the proximity sensor, it’s a different system, the FOB sends a signal to the car.
