Default Second key?

Got a 2014 ES UL delivered to me a few days ago. Love it, but it bothers me that it came with one key (I knew that before purchase). I may be worrying about something that will never happen, but what if I lost that key? Would I be able to call and get the car to operate? I will look into getting a second key; I suppose that may be expensive, but worth it. By the way, I love the car so far. ML sound and sport mode are two reasons. Thanks...

You need to go to a Lexus dealer and buy a new key. Replacing one when you still have one is expensive, replacing the keys when both are lost is crazy. There may be some options on replacing just one key but buying one on ebay is usually not the way to go.

I've read reports in forum posts from people who have bought keys from third party sources and who have been successful either in programming those keys themselves with Techstream or with having someone else program the keys for them. On the other hand, I've also read posts in which people said that they were not able successfully to program the keys or, in some cases, ended up disabling their own previously working key.

I know that the prospect of paying a Lexus dealer hundreds of dollars for a key and for programming it is not particularly appealing, but, for me, I doubt that I would be willing to take the chance of buying a key that I wasn't able to program successfully or, worse, of disabling my car completely by trying to get such a key to work.

Thank you for the replies. I hope it is not TOO many hundreds. So, if I lose this key while out of town, I'm just stranded till I acquire a key? No magic phone call to get the car open/started?

No "magic" OnStar-like system to open and start the car for 2014. Lexus introduced Enform Remote for 2015MY that allowed you to use a phone app to unlock doors and start the car, but you would need the key to drive since the engine shuts off when you unlock the doors. It'll probably run you around $300-500 to get a second key programmed.

For several reasons, I'm not sure that would help.

First, the Enform Remote has only been available on the ES since the 2015 model year.

He may or may not have the RES+, which was an option that also allows for remote starting with a smart phone and was an option for the 2014 ES, but, even if he has the RES+, I'm not sure if that would help. First, when you start the car with the smart phone app, I believe that the engine shuts off as soon as you open a door. Also, I believe that, when the car is started with RES+ (or with Enform Remote), the engine shuts off after 10 minutes.

Thank you all for the helpful replies. I know where I stand now. I am six hrs. away from closest Lexus dealer (Vegas or Phx.), so I'll get one when I can...

If you are that far away from a dealer, I would call first. I think they have to order the cut key using your VIN. Maybe you will be able to avoid having to make two trips to get this done.

Check to see if there is a local locksmith who can not only cut the key but program is as well.
I had a valet key cut for my Jaguar (it took a Ford blank) by a local lock smith and he was able to program it as well. I'm sure any locksmith who works on cars could handle a Toyota product.

But also, you say you're 6 hours from a Lexus dealer, how far to the nearest Toyota dealer? They should be able to do everything you need including getting the correct key fob.

It shouldn't be too bad --- I had an independent order a 2nd set of keys for me when I purchased the car. If I recall correctly, it was in the low $200s.
